unRAID/Plex questions

Featured Replies

Some questions for all you unRAID/Plex experts :)

I am a longtime Plex user...and I have had my unRAID server runnign for almost 2 years now.  I previously ran Plex Media Server on my Mac Mini and just left it and my unRAID server on 24/7.

I just installed Plex Media Server on my unRAID server last night.

My questions:

1.  It is still downloading metadata for my first two sections (Movies, TV Shows) and no cover art or series/episode information is displaying at all.  It has found all my movies and all my tv shows, but again...no cover art is being displayed.  It has been running/downloading for these 2 sections for over 18hrs now....and my internet is superfast (live in Seoul, South Korea)...is this normal?  Will cover art eventually be displayed?

2.  Connecting to Plex Media Server from android devices?  Do you have to manually enter the server?  I can view/play stuff from my ios devices (iPad 4) but cant seem to connect to the server from my Samsung Galaxy S4.

I'm sure I'll have more questions later...but that is it for now.

Thanks!

I wouldn't call myself an expert but I do have Plex running on unRAID and iOS and Android clients connecting to it. I don't have a lot of shows/movies on it, but I can say it wasn't the fastest when it came to scanning. I have seen Plex on unRAID where it stops responding (still shows the spinning circle) and I'd have to restart the Plex server (which half of the time wouldn't restart with some Plex error and I'd just reboot the entire unRAID to get it going again).

I have no problems with either iOS or Android clients finding the Plex server without any manual entry. I'm using the PlexPass version on Android if that matters. There's only one version (paid) on iOS as far as I know.

I recently moved to using PlexConnect with my AppleTV. I only have iOS devices, so I can't speak to the Android part, but I have noticed better reliability overall. Might be worth a try.

It's been a few days since you started this topic.  Did the ongoing downloading resolve itself?

There have been some known issues with downloading metadata for shows depending on what version of Plex you have. I would suggest the following:

1) Do a "shift key" and 'Refresh Library' to see if that helps

2) Go into an individual TV Show or Movie and click on "Incorrect Match" and then manually rematch the show and see if that works

No idea on Android - I don't use it. Probably best to post that in the Plex forums rather than UnRaid.

You need to go into your Plex Server Settings, then click on Agents.  Change them from "Local" to something else.  More than likely, its trying to pull local metadata, but it doesn't like it.

I tried to take a screen shot for you, but for some reason, nothing is showing up under Agents for me tonight.  I'll restart the service later.

Newer versions of Plex index all your files generating thumbnails that you can see while fast forwarding/rewinding media.  This takes forever for large collections and seems to delay the loading of art for other items as it slowly crawls your library.  You can disable this thumbnail indexing by going to Settings -> Plex Media Server -> Library -> Show Advanced Settings -> Uncheck "Generate media index files automatically"    You may need to restart the service for the changes to take affect.
