Looking to upgrade processor - advice

Featured Replies

I currently have a  X9SCM-F-O motherboard with a Intel i3-2100 3.1Ghz.

I would like to upgrade the processor on this build to better handle Virtualization, I was looking at Xeon E3-1270 V2 3.5GHz

I'm still a bit of a noob but from what i've read up on this processor should run fine with this board... anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117283

My BIOS is version 2 and the whole build specs:

MB:  SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155

Power: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650

RAM: Kingston 2 x 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) ECC Unbuffered

SAS Cards: 2x SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8

CASE: Antec Twelve Hundred V3

Cages: 4x ICY DOCK MB455SPF-B 5 in 3

Thanks for any help!

The 1230v2 is more of a "sweet spot" in the Xeon lineup =>  almost the same performance [8885 on PassMark vs. 9717 for the 1270v2] at a notably better price point [ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117286 ]

Both will "blow away" your i3-2100 [3601 on PassMark], and have full support of all Intel virtualization options.  [which, as you know, your i3 does not -- notably vt-d]

Good point on the price (sometimes I get processor googles) but for the performance it's not worth the extra 110$.

although looking again I'll probably swing an extra 30$ for the E3-1240 v2. passmark 9401.

Thanks for the advice!
