August 8, 201312 yr I had a old desktop PC running UnRaid 4.7 for about 2 years without any problem until I tried to upgrade to version 5 and add some plugins... The server was freezing, the web Gui was not responding. I decided to upgrade the server hardware and use ESXi, so I could keep UnRaid without any plugin for the stability and a Ubuntu VM for all the other apps. Case: Rosewill RSV-L4411 CPU: AMD FX-6100 Mobo: Gigabyte 970A-UD3 (6 Sata - Support passthrough of 4 sata onboard. 2 Sata available for the ESXi VM storage and 4 available for passthrough to 1 VM) RAM: 2 X 8GB DDR3 1600 Kingston HyperX Blue PSU: Corsair CX750M Video Card: Old Ati Rage 128 PCI Fan: 2 X ThermalTake ISGC 8 Fan (Replacement for the 2 Rosewill case fan) ESXi Storage: Western Digital Sata 320Gig Sata expansion Card IBM M1015 flash updated in LSI9211-8I IT mode (passthrough Unraid Server, 8 Drive available for Unraid) UnRaid Drive: 3 X 1TB Western Digital WD10EZEX - 1 Parity and 2 Data UnRaid Drive: 2 x 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001 - 1 Parity and 1 Data[/s] and 1 x 1TB Western Digital WD10EZEX - 2nd Data USB Stick for UnRaid: Old 2 gigs USB Stick for ESXi: Lexar 16Gb UPS: APC Back-UPS ES BE550G 550 VA 330 Watts, but usb communication not setup yet Network Cards: 3 x Intel EXPI9301CT Passthrough the VM (1 for Unraid) Primary Use: Media Server, Backup UnRaid Plugin: preclear, monthly parity check, powerdown, unraid notify... Very stable this way Other VM: Ubuntu running Plex, transmission, CrashPlan I had disk spin down problem with it Future Plans: Increase space capacity. I already own a IBM M1015 but haven't installed it yet. Setup the UPS to shutdown all VM and ESXi. Install a VM with Pfsense. I am happy with my new server. My only little dislike is for the drive rack with the Rosewill case. Some drive were not detected at boot so I have to push all the drive tray on the top and the bottom to be sure that the drive were correctly connected. I read the review and knows it before buying the case. For the price of this case I can live with it. The server is now online for near 3 month without any problem. The parity speed on my old server was 25MB/s and now it is 130MB/s I added Intel EXPI9301CT to my server and activate the passthrough of one card to the Unraid VM. This change did increase my read speed. My first Vmware network setup was a VM Network with virtual network apdater set to VMXNET3, my read speed was between 60MB/s and 80MB/s. The onboard ethernet on the motherboard is a Realtek RTL8111E. So I was sure that not constant read speed related to it. Now with the Intel passthrough the Unraid the speed is stable at 100 MB/s. No change in write speed at 48MB/s. I did my test with CrystalDiskMark.
