January 31, 201412 yr Thanks dirtysanchez and whiteatom. That's a hell of a lot more info then I got over at plex. Here's my post there: https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/93804-plex-pass-shared-server-limitations/ What are your questions? I've had a great experience with Plex. Only the server needs Plexpass for multiple users... But you need to understand what that does. Your don't need plex pass to run multiple vts in your house. I have 5 clients on a single server with no plex pass. I only needed plex pass when I started sharing with my buddy down the block, and then, all we gained was him watching content wouldn't affect my watch status. Ask away, I'll tell you want I know. I also already have multiple accounts (vts?) set up and separate watched statuses is what I am interested in. The only other question I would have then is about chromecast. It looks like each account (that wants to cast) needs to be plex pass to be able to cast to the chromecast dongle. Does the server also need plex pass? This is my first reason for my interest in a plex pass as I bought the dongle for a friend. If that's true I still don't think that's really fair for each of me "clients" to have to purchase a plex pass. The main reason I use Plex over XBMC is the client/server architecture and on-the-fly transcoding. I don't want to worry about having my media in mutiple resolutions and formats to suit different clients. Throw a single HD format on the server and let it transcode down to lesser resolutions/different formats on-the-fly if/when necessary. Friends and family also very much appreciate being able to watch content from my server remotely. This is also the exact reason I have plex installed. Not so much for me but for friends and family. I do also like that all the different ways to watch (web/app) remotely all sync my watch status. But I can't see me dropping XBMC for local content anytime soon. At the end of the day I was probably going to at least purchase a month and see how it all worked. Its just unfortunate there isn't a lot of information about plex pass, the features and limitations. From what I can tell all they have is the subscription page...
January 31, 201412 yr In the Plex settings screen, you should just be able to reference that drive directly, e.g. /dev/sdx I would advise AGAINST directly addressing your SSD in the form of /dev/sdX You cannot be sure the drive will be that same name the next time you reboot the server. You need to use, for example, the disk ID to reference the device and then mount it to a folder. You can see how to do that here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=30496.msg274120#msg274120 at step 2 So for example mine is mounted as /mnt/appdisk and that is how I reference it in the plex config.

Does the server also need plex pass? This is my first reason for my interest in a plex pass as I bought the dongle for a friend. If that's true I still don't think that's really fair for each of me "clients" to have to purchase a plex pass. Not sure about this one as I don't have a Chromecast. Different PlexPass features have different requirements for use (server vs. client). How does a Chromecast work? Does the dongle itself run the Plex interface, or does it simply receive the stream from a Plex server or client? Assuming it doesn't run Plex itself and receives the stream from another device, it's the device that would need a PlexPass. In other words, if you cast it from a server that is signed in with a PlexPass account, it should work. If you cast it from say an iPad with the Plex app which is not signed in with a PlexPass account, I would assume it will not work. This is also the exact reason I have plex installed. Not so much for me but for friends and family. I do also like that all the different ways to watch (web/app) remotely all sync my watch status. Its just unfortunate there isn't a lot of information about plex pass, the features and limitations. From what I can tell all they have is the subscription page... There's this page, but you're right in that it isn't super specific about HOW each of the PlexPass features work. Off the top of my head, the following features require the PlexPass account to be signed in on: Chromecast - client (assuming as per post above) Plex Sync - Client Cloud Sync - Server (to upload) and Client (to download) Early Access (to new PMS versions) - Server Multi-User Control - Server

If you cast it from say an iPad with the Plex app which is not signed in with a PlexPass account, I would assume it will not work. I think it receives a stream for another device (in my case an Android phone). As far as I understand I can't cast from the server itself. So in this scenario, One chrome cast dongle. Two Android phones. And myself with an Android, no dongle but want my watch status (when I watch on my phone) not to be effected by the two users of the chrome cast. ALL users need to have a Plex pass. That seem like a bit much to me. To add to the confusion, I have another use with an iPhone, I want his watched status separate also. But for this all I need is Plex pass for the server and not for the iPhone user. Correct? My biggest confusion is what is server side Plex pass enabled and what is client side Plex pass enabled. For example sync. Does every user with the Plex app on their phone need Plex pass? If Plex pass for ALL features were/are server side (ie one Plex pass enables all features) it would be far less confusing and far more reasonable for cost. It's hard to tell family and friends, hey you can use my server.... But you have to pay. Not me but some developers of software they don't understand. And this is either a monthly cost or $75 up front for something they will probably only use on occasion. Sent from my SM-N900W8 using Tapatalk
February 1, 201412 yr The whole concept of multi-user is fairly new: http://elan.plexapp.com/2013/06/04/plex-media-server-0-9-8-a-giant-step-towards-1-0/ as is Chromecast: http://elan.plexapp.com/2013/12/06/plex-on-the-chromecast-its-official/ I think it is safe to say that neither of these features are fully completed. Everyone who absolutely must use Chromecast today needs PlexPass, so they either need their own PlexPass account or they can share yours. Or you can just wait until they remove the PlexPass requirement for this feature. Today, only the server owner can sync content to other devices. If your family members need to sync content then they have to use your account. Just to be clear - syncing is not the same as watching, any free account that you share with can watch content. If you want separate watch lists you have to have separate accounts. These can be free accounts, unless you need a PlexPass feature like Chromecast (for now). Unfortunately they won't be able to sync. What this means for me is that my kid's tablets have to be logged in using my account so they can sync content for offline use. This isn't ideal because it also means we share watchlists and they have full access to the library. If you read the forums there are hints about parental controls coming, and my impression is that I will eventually be able to give each of my kids their own account, with restricted access, that also has the ability to sync. But no word on timeframe. Anyway, I hope that helps. I think Plex is amazing software, it has completely changed the way I view media since I found it about six months ago. Of course it also means I need a lot more storage, which is why I am now using unRAID
February 1, 201412 yr I think ljm42 explained it well. Anyone with a Plex.tv account can watch content from your server for free as long as you are sharing your server with their account. If they wish to use any of the PlexPass features, they will need to purchase a PlexPass for their own account. The other way around this is to allow them to use your account (assuming you have a PlexPass) and they could use all PlexPass features. But since the watchlists (viewed, on deck, etc) are tied to the Plex account, whatever they watched would be reflected on your devices as well as theirs.
February 3, 201412 yr Thanks for the thread everyone. I am hoping someone here can help with my issue. I have followed the instructions posted here and have Plex Running. However, when I access tower:32400/web and login to plex I get the following error. This media server is unavailable to you. Please check that you have permission to access this media server. Any ideas? I am open to suggestions. Updated: Configuration Information unRAID: 5.0rc8a Plex Version: v0.9.9.1.357-b2fadd5 Library directory: /mnt/cache/applications/Plex/library Temp directory: /mnt/cache/applications/Plex/temp Plex Package: located in /boot/extra/
February 4, 201412 yr Is your unraid/plex server on the same subnet as your pc? do you have noscript disabled? Cookies enabled?
February 4, 201412 yr Definitely on a different subnet. So based on that comment, do you think I would need to edit the preferences.xml file and add the AllowedNetwork Attribute? Seems fairly archaic. I bypassed that problem as the posts I was reading seemed very old and figured that this issue was addressed in current Plex releases. Not sure about the noscript disabled. Haven't seen anything on that one in my forum travels. Will look at what that means. No Cookies. Using incognito Chrome to ensure I didn't have any issues like this.
February 4, 201412 yr N noscript is a Firefox addon to block scripts. the fact that you didn't know that tells me you aren't using it Subnet: that is most likely the problem. It isn't a bug that would be fixed in current plex. For security they prevent other subnets from accessing plexweb. How to fix it, no idea other than adjusting your subnets, but there might be a some info on the plex forums on how to whitelist a subnet.
February 4, 201412 yr No cookies? umm you need cookies I think unless you're saying incognito will allow session cookies but won't retain any bad settings.

No you still have to allow other networks. But you don't need to edit any file. Click on the settings and choose advance and under network you will see allowed networks and add that subnet and voila you will have access. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

February 4, 201412 yr Plex Advanced Settings...Click on the crossed tools icon for settings, then its in the upper right. This is the Mac version...others differ slightly.

February 6, 201412 yr Log into plex.tv with the same account - make sure your server is showing up there as well.
February 7, 201412 yr Thanks Everyone. Seems to be working now. Had to edit preferences.xml file and include both the network that the UnRAID server is on along with the network I am accessing the server from.
February 8, 201412 yr Everyone - I'm having some troubles lately w/ Plex - probably self-inflicted, but I can't get to the bottom of it. I'm running 5.0.3 and Plex 0.9.8.18 is in /boot/extra . All had been running fine, including a version of the webGui that I had installed shortly after 5.0 was released. I updated the webGui from what was labeled r3 to a new download from github, now labeled r4 and in the process, I fear that I screwed something up. Plex no longer starts with the system upon reboot. If I monitor the boot, I can see it telling me that it's installing the package, and the screen indicates all installed w/o a hitch. Upon completion of the reboot, however, I do not find plex running, nor is it able to be found on the Settings page. I can see that no logs are being written to my cache disk, which is where I keep all Plex data. After a lot of trial and error and reboots I've found that if I go to /boot/extra and manually installpkg on the Plex txz, THEN I WILL see it in the settings page - but it always comes up as STOPPED. After I manually enable it, it's now running fine, logs now appear as expected on the cache disk, etc. If I look in the syslog after the reboot, I do not find any traces of plex messaging there even though it was displayed to the screen upon reboot! But, after re-installing the pkg thru a telnet session, NOW the syslog has detail about plex. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated - will happily share logs/etc Thanks, -JM

And do post a syslog. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=9880.0
February 8, 201412 yr The webGui that I mention is the unraid webGui from github, installed (in my case, via the re-install instructions) shown here: https://github.com/limetech/webGui I've attached a syslog from my most recent boot. There's only 1 line mentioning "Installing /boot/extra packages" but unfortunately it doesn't enumerate what comes to the screen during the boot, which is that is loads Plex (yet it's not running at the end of the boot process). Thanks again, -JM syslog2.txt
February 9, 201412 yr jmaino, I'd suspect a plug-in conflict. You have many plugins installed, including some I don't recognize. One of them, Headphones, isn't compatible with 5.0.x. You might also clean out any others that you don't use.
February 9, 201412 yr Hi Dale - here's some more debugging detail and a diagnosis/finding. I've updated to 5.05 to ensure that I'm on the most-current and I have removed ALL plugins and packages except for the unraid webGUI that I re-downloaded today. Even though the display tells me that plex has been loaded/installed , I find that it's not showing in the webGui unless I manually re-install it from a telnet session and it's not running on the system (no change since I first reported this). The remaining variable is the updated webGui that I downloaded. I've removed the webGui, rebooted, and voila - Plex now starts and is running when the system boots. So - the conclusion/finding here is that there's something that's incompatible between the Plex server and the newest webGui Unfortunately, I failed to back-up the r3 version of the webGui that I had been running (and which was properly functioning w/ the Plex package). I'm hopeful that Tom and the other webGui development contributors are monitoring this, but I'll try to reach out to him separately. Regards, -JM
February 9, 201412 yr There were reports that the unRAID webGUI was not being kept current...some time back around v.5.0.3 or thereabouts. I thought that was fixed and it was okay, again. If you want the added web functionality, take a look at Dynamix...its the successor to SimpleFeatures and works splendidly with Plex. (be sure to grab the Dynamix plugin package, as well.
