Replacing 2Tb with 4Tb, MBR-unaligned to GPT-aligned ?

Featured Replies

I have 2 WD EADS 2Tb disks, which I want to replace with Seagate HDD.15 4Tb disks.

Currently these disks are MBR-unaligned, but the 4Tb disks should be GPT (aligned). Will the resizing process of unraid after rebuilding convert the disks to GPT and make it aligned ?

Yes. Disks over 2.2TB use GPT and MBR alignment is moot

But are they automatically converted when upsizing the disk after the rebuild ?

I'm not adding a new disk, but replacing an existing one. Unraid then rebuilds the disk, so it will rebuild the disk as a 2Tb MBR-unaligned, and then upsize it as it sees the disk is bigger. But in this case it not only needs to resize it in reiserfs but also needs to change the disk to GPT

Yes it works.  I've upgraded many 2TB drives to 3TB in size and they updated just fine.

Not exactly....  unRAID parity protects the first partition.  The actual partitioning is done first (the GPT partition is created first), then the 2TB partition's worth of file-system is re-constructed in the 3TB partition space allocated to the first partition, then the reiserfs file-system re-sized to fit the 3TB space.  It does not change an MBR partition into a GPT partition as you theorized.
