August 29, 201312 yr http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149396 I've come to like these drives, having not experienced any issues with them (yet, we all know its only a matter of time). I do a three pass pre-clear on them, no problem. I have two pre-clearing now as I type this (50% done on step 10), I'm not anticipating any issues from them either. I am a little disappointed I didn't wait to order them now, but, I have two WD20EARS that I recently put in that I forgot (not sure how) to put a jumper on them, so these two Toshiba's are going to replace them (just incase there is an issue during rebuild using the Toshibas I will still have the EARS with full data on them). Anyway.. not to try to sell people on them, but as I said, I'm surprised they don't seem to be used more often. I get 60 MB/s parity writes (55~65) with them, using one as parity and when writing the data to them. On the EARS I get 40~44 (again using this Toshiba as the parity). Read speed is 80~85MB/s. TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s - Retail packaged (with both Amazon and Newegg using cheap lazy means of packaging on OEM as of late, I've been sticking with Retail). Also retail is 3 year whereas the OEM is 1 year if I'm not mistaken, on this particular model. No idea when this "sale" ends.
August 29, 201312 yr Author Oh, they come with a free desktop fan as well. So, for those doing their first 24 drive builds, you'll have some freebie gifts to give this Xmas lol. Attaching the picture so my initial post didn't seem like such an advertisement <grin> I do my pre-clears cycles manually, thus the "cycle 1 of 1".
August 30, 201312 yr Drive temp 25C?!? Are you in Alaska, or do you have so many fans that hearing protection is required? 25C is the ambient temperature in my "server room."
August 30, 201312 yr Author I have my server equipment/rack in a modified closet (ducting and sound dampening) with a portable AC and dehumidifier. Those temps are the "high" temps, I was running a parity check to prepare for replacement of two (total but one at a time) EARS data drives that I forgot to set a jumper on. Usually they sit around at a nice comfortable 18C when only a few drives are spun up. Alaska? I wish I could get free cold air <grin> but no, in Virginia.
