Error: "'vt100': unknown terminal type." when using "screen" and PUTTY

if I type "screen" and then drop back to shell and try the command "top" it gives the error "'vt100': unknown terminal type.".

 

Any idea why my screen implementation isn't working? I tried googling and didn't find much.

    It works for me IF I enter:  export TERM=linux  ...AFTER entering screen.
