No longer have access to my user shares

Featured Replies

I'm running unRAID 4.5 Beta1 with a Pro license. I was trying to set up NFS shares. I was successful to the point of being able to mount the shares in Mac OS X 10.5.6. However I could not play any of my videos as I kept getting permission denied error. I decided to stop my NFS experiment and just run the server with the SMB protocol as before. However when I returned everything to the previous settings I was no longer able to access my user shares. I cannot even ls the user folder. I get a permission denied error.

If I do a ls -lna on /mnt all I get is this:

drwxr-xr-x  6 0 0  0 Dec 16 03:35 ./

drwxr-xr-x 16 0 0  0 Dec 16 02:28 ../

drwxr-xr-x  6 0 0 120 Dec 16 02:16 disk1/

drwxr-xr-x  6 0 0 120 Dec 11 20:56 disk2/

drwxr-xr-x  6 0 0 120 Dec 11 20:56 disk3/

d?????????  ? ? ?  ?            ? user/

Note the hosed up "user" folder. The disk shares are fine and I can access my files through them, however I'd like to restore my user shares functionality.

I tried all I know so far:

- stopping/restarting the array

- going back to 4.4 final

- trying several commands: chmod, chown

Nothing seems to work. Also searched the forum, but I was not able to find anything similar to this problem.

I'm now running the final 4.4 server, but the problem still remains.

Any help will be very appreciated. I'm not a Linux expert, so go easy on me. :-)

Thanks in advance.

PS: Attached is my Syslog file. Please feel free to point out anything else I might be doing wrong in my setup.

Help anyone?

Limetech?

There's a lot of changes and new stuff in the newest syslogs, which I'm not up on yet.  In particular, I have no experience with NFS, or how it appears in the syslog.

What I can say, is that you booted at 2:28am, and User Shares did not start up, then you logged in at 3:34am and almost immediately, the unRAID array was stopped and restarted, and User Shares starts this time.  I am unable to help beyond that.  This is the beta version of NFS support, and probably needs additional tweaking, to adapt to the many user configurations out there.  I would wait for more expert help, or a later update.

One of these messages may be significant:

afpd[2013]: main: atp_open: Address family not supported by protocol
afpd[2013]: uam: "No User Authent" available

The following message would seem to indicate you may not have full Internet access, so you may want to turn off NTP use.

ntpd_initres[1270]: host name not found: pool.ntp.org

Thanks RobJ,

I disabled NFS shares and went back to the regular Samba shares, but the problem seems to be the wrong permissions are being set to the "user" folder under "mnt". I can see all the disk shares, but I get "permission denied" when trying the "user" folder where my user shares are mounted.

At this point I'm getting frustrated for not being able to find the information I need to fix my problem and I'm not sure what to do.

Seriously considering selling my Pro license and moving on to other solutions such as FreeNAS. At least I would not complain for the lack of support and documentation being it a free product, and it supports out of the box the features I'm trying to use in my unRAID box: NFS, AFP and many others. Sure it's not perfect and may not work the way I expect, but at least I will get what I paid for.

Cheers.

I am sorry for the issues you have been having, but I could not help feeling that some of your comments were a little unfair, since unRAID does not officially have NFS support yet.  I do realize you were speaking out of frustration.

There is a clear commitment to NFS, and the first beta of its support is now available, but it can't be considered as part of the purchase until officially released.  When it is officially 'blessed', then one would expect it work reasonably well, be officially supported, and full documentation be available.  But during a beta period, there should not be any expectation of completely satisfactory operation, support, or documentation, only that it has been reasonably well tested internally, by the developer.

It is true that, at this point, your needs may be better met by other products with solid and tested support already available for NFS and AFP and other things you need, but you may want to monitor unRAID for the future.  I'm in no way trying to criticize.  I think you may have jumped into unRAID too soon, before the features you needed were fully 'cooked'.

Yes RobJ,

I was very frustrated, but after emailing Tom and getting an incredible level of support I have to eat my words and say that I'm very please and very satisfied for having chosen unRAID and Lime Tech.

I was able to get my array back up and running with the full functionality by installing a fresh copy of unRAID in my flash drive, then reassigning the drives correctly as they were before. All my files are there and the user shares functionality is restored.

Tom was extremely helpful in trying to figure out what went wrong and why we couldn't get the user shares to work again. Unfortunately there weren't really many clues for us to follow and all our attempts to restore the functionality were unsuccessful. However, I can't stress enough how awesome his support has been.

If I had any doubts and due to frustration questioned my choice, now I'm positively certain that unRAID is the right product for me and Lime Tech/Tom are awesome.

I'm still interested in NFS and for the same reasons AFP, but I will not attempt anything again before backing up all my configuration and reading tons of material online (which I already did, but apparently it didn't help me much - at least not as far as preventing me from getting into trouble in the first place).

Again I appreciate the help and support from Tom and the community, and apologize for my harsh words due to my frustration.

Cheers.
