Putty - Telnet Suddenly Asking for Password

Featured Replies

I was trying to pull up my pre-clears and was having some problems. So in attempt to get some help here on the forum I went to copy the telnet screen.

Whatever happened pasted a bunch of stuff, then the screen shut down. Now whenever I log on with root it asks for a password.

Anyone know what the deal is?

I can access UnMenu if a syslog from there will help.

Have you restarted since then and continue to have the issue?

Restarted the box? No.... it's on 1 of 3 pre-clear sessions.

Restarted Telnet, yes. Restarted the computer using telnet, yes.

Can you access the web gui? Does it ask for password? If not then there is something odd going on since it should be synced. It's also odd that you would manage somehow to accidentally enable root password when copying something from the telnet session. Perhaps you set it in the web gui (Users / root) early in the process. You can also remove it there by setting an empty password.

Yes, I can access the web gui by typing //tower

just added a password to the GUI, logged out, logged in. Password is working on the GUI, but not in Telnet via the Putty app.

The GUI password is the same as for root.

Yes, that was suggested above. So, as I said above, I added a password to the GUI, tested to make sure it was working, then tried with telnet and had no success.

While what you say is correct, there is something going on whether it's me or a flaw with putty or telnet.

go to http://tower/Users/UserEdit?name=root and. Put in a new password.

  • 1 month later...

I have a very similar issues.

I have had 4 screens running Preclear over this weekend, I was able to Telnet via Putty to check progress until today when it asks for a password. As I haven't set a password I am unable to login via Telnet now, although I am still logged in to the Webgui and can see the Precelars all passed ok via the log.

If I try to modify anything via the Webgui, such as change the root pw, add a share etc. nothing happens.

Were you doing the pre-clears in Telnet sessions?    If so, closing the sessions kills the pre-clear ==> so when you restarted the system you were running the Telnet sessions on, you killed the pre-clears.

Not sure if it helps the mod but a server reboot and then setting the root password seemed to solved the problem. You can always use the logs to see when your preclears have finished.
