September 23, 201312 yr http://www.vmwarearena.com/2013/09/difference-between-vsphere-51-and.html This may be of interest to us. SATA-based virtual device nodes via AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) support - Yes (Support upto 120 devices per VM)
September 23, 201312 yr this line is also very interesting from the same article :-) ESXi Free version RAM limit vsphere 5.1 32 GB ESXi Free version RAM limit vsphere 5.5 unlimited think that might make a few people here happy.
September 23, 201312 yr hmm now how hard/easy would it be to upgrade from 5.1 to 5.5 though. I heard upgrading esxi to newer version is always tricky

September 23, 201312 yr The vsphere client now states 5.5 features are no longer available through the client, only with the web client. How do i get the web client? Doesn't that require a vcenter server installation?

September 24, 201312 yr Anyone installed? installed last night, installed fine on 12 core AMD opteron and 56GB RAM took about 20 min total. new client starts and warn that new features are only avail from web client. but still , the new clinet have lots more things availabel that were not there before. crerated new VM for unraid using the vmdk from here. but forgot where the flash drive for testing, so the VM booted, could login to it as root but no gui or anything. still no PCI passthough with my hardware so it's useless for me.
September 24, 201312 yr still no PCI passthough with my hardware so it's useless for me. You have IOMMU enabled in your BIOS, right?

So there still is a local windows vsphere client?

I have always patched ESX but this sounds much simpler. Can anyone add some more detail? I think it is right because it's a whole new release with new ISO, not a patch that they release where you have to do it through command line (for free license user at least) I haven't tried this yet so i dont know for sure tho haha

So there still is a local windows vsphere client? yes you can download it with the main ISO or after install from the web portal. it is updated, and you can use for most common functions, I am not sure what is missing as I only do the basic stuff like create VM, start stop VM etc.
September 24, 201312 yr still no PCI passthough with my hardware so it's useless for me. You have IOMMU enabled in your BIOS, right? I do , but my hardware have limited IOMMU support (it is an AMD based server from TAMs) I know some of the functionality works as I had been successful in passing through my PCI-x controller to unRaid using Ubuntu 12.4 + Xen 4.2 setup , it took me almost a week to figure it out how with the help of several people on this board. but xen is the only HV that works. I tried XenServer 6.2, ESXi5.0 and 5.5, XCP nothing works.
September 24, 201312 yr I did install it yesterday Evening. I mounted the ISO via ipmi an booted from it. Install is pretty straight forward, you just need to select your esxi install disk. After which it detects your esxi install and prompts the option to upgrade. Vsphere client on windows works fine, it just needs to update some things after first logon to 5.5. Server has been running over 24hrs fine now... Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4
September 25, 201312 yr I have one problem with esxi 5.5 I am using a sata controller card from monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&p_id=2530&seq=1&format=2 I have a test vm set up for unraid.. in esxi 5.1, i had this card hw passthrough to the test vm and unraid vm was able to see the hdd connected to this card. After the update, this test unraid vm doesn't see hdd's connected to the card anymore. I added the card to a windows 7 vm and it was reading the hdd fine. so that tells me that hw passthrough and the controller itself is working correct.. I looked at the syslog, and around line 1012, there's a message saying 'Sep 25 04:49:49 ClearVM kernel: ata1: controller in dubious state, performing PORT_RST' What does it mean by 'dubious state'? Does anyone that pass through this card have similar problems? I have another unraid machine with two M1015's and they're working without any problem.. ------------------------ Edit: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2056935 Found this KB article... and 1095:3132 SiI 3132 [sATALink/SATARaid] Serial ATA Controller is in 'Devices deprecated and unsupported' list.. I wonder if that's why.. hmm.. syslog.txt
September 26, 201312 yr I would say your idea is correct. I know in earlier versions they had to make a custom ISO to have ESXi work with a Sil3132 based controller so someone will likely have something like that to make it work sooner or later.
September 26, 201312 yr Hmm.. Just to update what I found out. It only seems to cause a problem with Linux VM's & Sli 3132 controller. Windows VM detects the sata card without any problems but in Linux VM's (Linux Mint), I see bunch of these lines on the VM: "sata_sil24: IRQ status == 0xffffffff, PCI fault or device removal?" Then the PSOD on ESXi machine: It is throwing something about rtl8168 (My LAN controller), but this only happens when the sata card was added to the VM so if you have sil 3132 controller with esxi, you may want to be careful or maybe it's just my card that's going crazy
September 28, 201312 yr Whats the link to the free esxi 5.5 ? I currently have free 5.1 running and want to make sure I pick the right one. Thanks
