replace parity drive

Featured Replies

Im sure there is a link some where...

I have a 1.5TB Parity Drive I want to replace it with a  2TB drive so I can start adding 2TB drives.

I cant find a how-to replace a parity drive.

I tried this but it does not seem clear?  I don't really want to do a swap disable do I ?

I know I have to precelar first.

Then I can add the drive, how do I remove the parity drive and tell the system to use the new 2tb drive as the parity?

okay I think I have a clue

"If you are replacing your existing Parity disk with a bigger one, then when you Start the array, the system will simply start a parity sync onto the new Parity disk. "

So my only question is when do I remove the existing parity drive.... When I select the new one and the parity is complete?

Preclear the new parity drive.

Stop the array.

Unassign old drive.

Assign new drive.

Start the array.

Voila.

thanks, this is why I love unraid and tell everyone on every forum... its so easy.

I set my unraid server up 2 years ago and I knew nothing of unix but even I could do it.

I also like the community here that can always lend a hand.

I am just about to put my first 3TB drive into service as my new parity drive (Post-read is 99%!).  It will be replacing a 2TB parity drive which will then go into the array for data storage.

1) Is it recommended to let parity rebuild on the new parity drive prior to adding the 2TB to the array? Just to be sure...

2) Do I need to pre-clear the 2TB that's been in parity service to use as a data drive, or will unRAID recognize it as cleared but unformatted when I add it to the array?

Running 5.0.4.

I would wait until the new parity drive has completed its initial parity sync before doing anything else.  In fact, I'd also run a parity check after the sync completes, just to confirm all is well at that point (a parity sync does not verify the data).

When you add your old 2TB parity drive to the array, it will need to be cleared before it can be formatted and used.    Since it's clearly been in use a long time and you know it's okay, I'd run a single pre-clear cycle on it with the -n option, which skips the pre-read and post-read and just does the actual pre-clear ... this will take about 1/4th the time of a full cycle.    The drive will then add to the array very quickly ... requiring only a format (just a few minutes).

TYVM, Gary. I will do so.

EDIT: Parity built & checked, old 2TB pre-cleared, formatted & part of the drive. Thanks, again, Gary.
