Hopefully ASROCK releases similar boards with the Sxxx series CPUS
September 25, 201312 yr The Avoton based boards are largely targeted at high-density storage "farms" and micro-blades. They're actually expected to have very good performance ... on the order of 5 times the previous S series Atoms. But these will also likely be pretty expensive boards ... at least initially (~ $500 or so). I suspect most will choose other alternatives for UnRAID ... but it is a very interesting board.
September 25, 201312 yr Right, I fully expect them to excel at what they are designed for. But if they really do not have support for all of those extensions (aka "features", and I do find it surprising that they wouldn't) then they will be horrible for things like transcoding, or just about anything else other than acting as file servers. At least that is what I would predict given the info provided.

Everything I've seen indicates that the Avoton-based boards are going to be $500+ Not a big deal for the high-density storage "farms" they're targeted at; but a bit pricey for an UnRAID system. Nevertheless, they're VERY nice boards.

Given the performance level, ECC support, 12 SATA ports, and the very low power consumption, this is a VERY nice board !! ... and it's mini-ITX to boot, so you can use it in my favorite little case !! (PC-Q25B) Although it begs for a somewhat larger case so you can use all 12 SATA ports
February 4, 201412 yr Wonder how well this would handle running VM's under Unraid6? It depends on whether or not you're running a hypervisor that requires pass-through. The Avoton PCU supports vt-x, but not vt-d. In terms of raw performance, it has enough "horsepower" to run VM's at a reasonable speed. There are several threads in the "Serve the Home" forums about folks running 4 or 5 VMs under Hyper-V on an Avoton with reasonable performance.
February 4, 201412 yr Wonder how well this would handle running VM's under Unraid6? It should work great. The only limitation, as gary states, is no VT-d, so no device passthrough. But with unRAID v6, where unRAID itself is the host (dom0), most people won't need passthrough.
February 5, 201412 yr Cheers for that! That's now officially on my wish list! Ditto -- this is a VERY attractive option for a mini-ITX build. There are now several very good choices for motherboards for this form factor -- an abundance of riches !!

I'm planning on getting my hands on this Supermicro Board: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SAi-2550F.cfm I don't really trust ASRock yet when it comes to Server parts, whereas Supermicro already has made a name for themselves. This one only got 6 SATA Ports but that's fine since I'm not planning to buy the Pro Version of unRaid anyway.

February 8, 201412 yr I just found a shop close to me that sells this board quite cheap, but I would really like to know if this supports standby / s3. probably not, but some ASRock Xeon boards do, so it's worth a shot. The Supermicro never support S3. Can you check using 'cat /sys/power/state' what the output is?
