This http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Atom/Intel-Atom%20C2750.html tells me that it might end up being an amazing NAS board and an even better virtualized multi-NAS board.

But when you look at the "Features" of the specific CPU used it tells me it will be a horrible board for anything else such as PLEX, or virtualized non-NAS only instance; basically anything that might find MMX, SSE, SSE2, etc useful.  Hopefully ASROCK releases similar boards with the Sxxx series CPUS

The Avoton based boards are largely targeted at high-density storage "farms" and micro-blades.    They're actually expected to have very good performance ... on the order of 5 times the previous S series Atoms.

But these will also likely be pretty expensive boards ... at least initially (~ $500 or so).    I suspect most will choose other alternatives for UnRAID  :)

... but it is a very interesting board.

Right, I fully expect them to excel at what they are designed for.  But if they really do not have support for all of those extensions (aka "features", and I do find it surprising that they wouldn't) then they will be horrible for things like transcoding, or just about anything else other than acting as file servers.  At least that is what I would predict given the info provided.

Probably very expensive, but also very slick...

For some reason I find myself saying "I want one".

Nice to see some performance figures -- looks like it's meeting the targeted performance level of 5x the S series Atom chips.

Very slick!

The pricing will definitely be interesting to see.    Everything I've seen indicates that the Avoton-based boards are going to be $500+

Not a big deal for the high-density storage "farms" they're targeted at; but a bit pricey for an UnRAID system.

Nevertheless, they're VERY nice boards.

I'm not surprised at the price -- that's in the range I expected for an Avoton-based board.    As I've said before on this and other threads, they're very nice boards, but very high cost for an UnRAID build.

These boards just showed up! I just bought one from newegg for $359. Gonna give it a go.

You got me concerned with your mention that it might not do well with Plex. That is one of my key components for this build. Looking at your link it does support MMX, SSE, etc though doesn't it? Any insight would be appreciated.

I was thinking it should do fine for Plex based off of this performance review:

Edit: Just went to add the newegg link and see that it is out of stock... I must have bought the last one!  :o

@maxrogers,

Did you end up getting one mate? Very curious how it handled PLEX. I'm looking at one of these board specifically to give more transcoding 'ummph' over my current D525!! Also want to use it with FFMPEG to re-encode a lot of my uncompressed movies / tv shows!!

Yes, I posted some of my findings here:

https://forums.plex.tv/index.php?/topic/88316-intel-avoton-octa-processor-powerful-enough-to-do-1080p-many-streams/page__view__findpost__p__529342

It is a really impressive piece of hardware. If you get one, you will love it! It has no problems transcoding multiple1080p streams.

Wow that is awesome.!  It's on my xmas list now :-)

Nice to see the price down to under $400.

Given the performance level, ECC support, 12 SATA ports, and the very low power consumption, this is a VERY nice board !!  ... and it's mini-ITX to boot, so you can use it in my favorite little case !!  (PC-Q25B)    Although it begs for a somewhat larger case so you can use all 12 SATA ports  8)

Wonder how well this would handle running VM's under Unraid6?

It depends on whether or not you're running a hypervisor that requires pass-through.  The Avoton PCU supports vt-x, but not vt-d.

In terms of raw performance, it has enough "horsepower" to run VM's at a reasonable speed.    There are several threads in the "Serve the Home" forums about folks running 4 or 5 VMs under Hyper-V on an Avoton with reasonable performance.

It should work great.  The only limitation, as gary states, is no VT-d, so no device passthrough.  But with unRAID v6, where unRAID itself is the host (dom0), most people won't need passthrough.

Cheers for that! That's now officially on my wish list!

Ditto -- this is a VERY attractive option for a mini-ITX build.  There are now several very good choices for motherboards for this form factor -- an abundance of riches !!  :)

So in theory if he was able to decode multiple 1080p Streams with the 8 Core Avoton, the 4 Core Unit should be fine with one stream?

I'm planning on getting my hands on this Supermicro Board: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SAi-2550F.cfm

I don't really trust ASRock yet when it comes to Server parts, whereas Supermicro already has made a name for themselves. This one only got 6 SATA Ports but that's fine since I'm not planning to buy the Pro Version of unRaid anyway.

Theoretically, yes.

I just found a shop close to me that sells this board quite cheap, but I would really like to know if this supports standby / s3. probably not, but some ASRock Xeon boards do, so it's worth a shot. The Supermicro never support S3.

Can you check using 'cat /sys/power/state' what the output is?
