APC UPS Plugin 3.14.10 updated for unRAID Version 5.0 - Two Logging issues Fixed

Noticed this in my syslog:

Feb 27 11:29:23 TheMonolith apcupsd[15444]: UPS Self Test switch to battery.
Feb 27 11:29:33 TheMonolith apcupsd[15444]: UPS Self Test completed: Not supported

Is this normal?

I don't think it's a problem.  The UPS will self test on its own.

The plugin has been updated for powerdown 2.06.  This plugin is for unRAID V5.x only and will not run on V6.x.

Just wondering what APC UPS everyone is using?  Newegg reviews aren't super helpful and if I am going to spend $100+ I don't want to be disappointed.  Any recommendations?

I've used an APC Back-UPS Power-Saving ES 8 outlet 700VA for a few years on my desktop, and it has worked great with outages, haven't had any issues, and battery is still good. I bought a second one for my unRAID box, but that hasn't been tested.

The only complaint is that the ethernet plug isn't gigabit. I had to get a separate ethernet surge protector to get that to work, otherwise I was stuck with 10MB/s transfer speeds. Further detail in my build thread in my sig (last few posts).

Ok, thanks!

I'm very puzzled as to why the speed on the ethernet port of your UPS should affect your data transfer speeds.  I'll go and look at your build thread!

I didn't know where to post this as it might be a control panel plugin issue, but here goes.

I installed APCUPS pluging 3.14.10 from control panel and it seems to install ok by the log at the top of the page

success

success
file /var/log/plugins/apcupsd: already exists
plugin successfully installed

but way down the control panel install page it shows not installed, also the settings page also shows this:

Daemon: Stopped  UPS: Offline

The terminal shows some errors, see attachment pic

The APCUPS plugin didn't install properly and I don't know why, it installed and worked well using this method on my testbox

I've had a couple of tries at this, same thing each time

Any help appreciated

Post a full system log.  What other plugins are you using?

One thing I see is that the version you are using installs an older version of powerdown.  While this is not the problem you are having with apcupsd, you should update to the newer version posted in the OP.

Here is the log. I noticed a "wget: unable to resolve host address" for a APCUPS related file on the boot up this morning, so I will have to dig into that later on today.

You have several things going on here.  The first is that unRAID 5.05 is known to have an issue when booting up.  The plugins try to download packages before the network is up and running.  That looks like what is going on here.  It is affecting apcupsd because it is the first plugin to be installed.

The other thing is the apcupsd package you are using is an older package.

Here is what I would do:

- Remove the apcupsd plugin.

- Remove the powerdown and apcupsd packages from the /boot/packages directory.

- Download and install the version of apcupsd on the OP.

Installplg apcupsd, or re-boot.  This plugin waits for the network to be available and shouldn't fail when downloading packages after a re-boot.

Ok, did as you suggested and it did not work on reboot with the same error in the terminal appearing "wget:unable to resolve host address etc," and these lines in the syslog.

Mar 13 18:31:16 unRAID logger: installing plugin: Apcupsd-3.14.10-i486-4_rlw-dl
Mar 13 18:31:16 unRAID logger:  file /boot/packages/apcupsd-3.14.10-i486-4_rlw.tgz: downloading from http://slackware.org.uk/people/rworkman/14.0/i486/apcupsd-3.14.10-i486-4_rlw.tgz ... bad download, deleting

So going back to my testbox I tried the manual install and all went well, so I did the same for my main unraid and it also installed and appears to be working.

I guess that network issue with v5.0.5 is causing the problem?

Also will the manual install survive a reboot?, seems it did on the testbox, have not tried the main box yet

thanks for taking the time to help and all your plugin work

Probably.

Yes.

Hello and thanks for your work on this plugin dlandon.

I have it up and running on my server running unraid 5.0.4 w/ a Back-UPS ES 550 connected via USB. The full UPS info shows up on the plugin page just fine.

I just want to make sure that I have the settings right for it to shutdown properly.

Here are my current settings from the config file:

#apcupsd configuration

SERVICE="enable"

UPSCABLE="usb"

CUSTOMUPSCABLE=""

UPSTYPE="usb"

DEVICE=""

BATTERYLEVEL="10"

MINUTES="10"

TIMEOUT="0"

KILLUPS="NO"

SHOWFULLSTATUS="yes"

Can someone explain exactly what the battery level, minutes, and timeout fields mean? I assume if minutes is set to 10, it will powerdown my server after 10 minutes of running on battery. With battery level set at 10, I'd think this means it will powerdown the server if the battery level reaches 10%. I'm not sure what the timeout field means. Is all of this information correct? I tried searching to find this information or preferred settings and came up empty handed. Thanks!

Battery Level = the ups will run until the ups battery level goes below this number.

Minutes = the ups will run battery until ups minutes left goes below this number.  ( This use to be the amount of minutes the ups would run for on battery.)

Timeout = the ups will run on battery for whatever number (in seconds) is inserted in this field.  If you want the ups to run until minutes or battery level is reached then the number would be 0.

So in your scenario the ups will run on battery until either the battery level falls below 10% or there are 10 minutes of battery power left since timeout = 0.
