Are new drives automatically added to free space upon assigning?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've added another 3TB disk to my array and it doesn't show up as added free space.  Is this normal behaviour?

Should new drives show as free space once assigned or do they not show until unRAID has started to write to them?  I'm using the High Water allocation method.

You have assigned and formatted the new drive and it has a green dot?

Then it should show as free space.

The drive is assigned as disk3, it has been formatted, and there is indeed a green ball beside it

Are your shares all set to use all drives?

i.e. do you have any "Includes" or "Excludes" set for the shares?

If, for example, a share is set to "Include" disk1 and disk2, and you add disk3, it will NOT use that new drive unless you add it to the list of included drives.

If, however, you don't have any includes or excludes, then shares will use all available drives -- in which case the newly added space should be included in the computations for available space.

The disk3 seems to have 19% used already?

Have you moved files straight to a the disk?

Since Disk1 is showing 100% used and disk2 95% used, I would consider manually moving some of their contents to disk3.  unRAID does not automatically rebalance a system when a new disk is added.

I remember having some allocation method that did balance the disks on a share if that is what the OP is looking for.

Just that my drives are so full right now that I cannot confirm.  :-\

All my shares are set to

Allocation method: High-Water

Split level: Not set - split function not used

Included disk(s): All

Excluded disk(s): None

I had started to move some data from an old machine to disk3 which is why it is showing a % used.

I've added another 1TB as a test, it was formatted from the GUI (Simplefeatures) and assigned to disk4 when formatted, it also has a green ball beside it but it isn't showing towards the total free space (shfs stats) either.

But you have mapped the share on your pc?

If so, does that show the correct total?

  • Author

I haven't mapped any shares to the PC as at the moment I'm simply backfilling the unRAID box with my media on my Drobos.

From reading a few threads in the forums there seems to be a possible issue with adding new disks that aren't pre-cleared and the stock GUI has been replaced with Simple Features.

I'm currently moving the media off disk3 again and once this is complete I'll pre-clear it to see if that helps.

One thing to note I guess is that the first 2 discs, my initial array didn't have this problem, but Simple Features wasn't installed at that time.

So, after running preclear for 9hrs on the 3TB that wasn't being added to the array initially, the disk is still not being added to the array.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Have you assigned the drive to the array?  Preclear doesn't do that for you.

Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos.

Yes, disk3 has been added to the array.

I've also remove Simple Features now and back to using the stock webGUI and adding the disk to the array still doesn't add it.

I removed disk3 from my case, attached it to my main PC and used Partition Magic 8 to remove any partitions etc.  I then reinstalled it in the unRaid box.  unRaid detected it required formatting and I then selected the format option.  One the disc was formatted it was allocated to the array.  Unfortunately It still doesn't display as part of the array.  It's now 1am and I need my beauty sleep.

This is not what the standard GUI shows -- are you using Simple Features?    If so, disable it and then be sure there are no includes or excludes and I suspect this will start working.    It may also work if you simply "toggle" the includes in Simple Features -- I don't use it, so I don't know what your choices are; but basically you want to change it; then change it back to "All".

I am not sure quite what you mean by what you are saying?  You say it has been formatted but is not showing as part of the array?  That sounds like a contradiction in terms as it has to be part of the array to allow it to be formatted  Perhaps you should include a screen shot of the Main page from the unRAID GUII?

I think what he's saying is the drive has been added, but the space isn't showing.  I think it's due to it not being an "included" drive => if you have ANY includes in a share, then no other drives are included without explicitly being listed.    I suspect this is a bug in the Simple Features "All" setting (perhaps only with v5.0) ... but as I don't use Simple Features I can't say for sure.

@OP

Can you post some screenshots?

I suppose you mean that the share is not expanded over the new drive, but let's see how

your screenshots look like.

Thanks all, I'm currently at work and will post a screen shot when I get home.

Although I don't think this is a simpleFeatures issue as I've since removed simpleFeatures and from memory the current Include and Exclude settings on all my shares are empty.

I'll post a screen shot once home.

OK guys, so I've resolved the issue!  I had totally ignored the Settings/Share Setting options.  I had included disk1,disk2.  Once I'd removed that and restarted the array, disk3 is now included.
