Preclear in disk-disabled slot - but keep array running?

Featured Replies

I'd like to replace a 2TB drive that went disabled with a new 4TB. Problem is, I have no free slots to run the preclear.

I'd like to yank the bad drive (disk12) and preclear the new drive in that slot but keep the array going as well. Parity is already 4TB so no problem there.

How to proceed? (running RC15)

Yes you can do that but during the time it takes to pre-clear if another drive dies you will loose data.

Stop array

Do a clean shutdown. Replace faked drive.

Power up.

Start array with out assigning new drive to array.

Run pre-clear once done stop array assign drive to replace bad drive.

During process pray.  Just an idea for future see if you can have a pre-cleared drive ready for this. 4tb takes about 12 hrs at fastest I have seen usually more like 20hrs and rebuild takes a long time as well. I use my cashe drive as a hot spare just for this reason if any drive dies since my cashe drive has been pre-cleared I just place it in the slot of the old drive and start rebuild.

Have fun
