October 5, 201312 yr Hi all, What is the work of parity drive. My PC's have 3 Hard Disk (2 TB + 2 TB + 2 TB) = 6 TB Now please suggest me, how many space select for parity drive and how money space for data drive. Best Regards, Nishadul Haque
October 5, 201312 yr The parity drive has to be the biggest drive in the pc. It will also not go towards your data pool. So your array will look like: 2tb parity drive 2tb disk 1 2tb disk 2 4tb array. If you got the money now i would highly suggest getting a parity drive in the 3tb-4tb size now so you can add 3tb-4tb drives to the array when you need them down the road.
October 5, 201312 yr The parity drive is what allows UnRAID to be fault-tolerant => i.e. still provide full access to your data even if one drive fails. As noted above, it has to be >= the largest data drive (otherwise it couldn't maintain parity for all blocks on the drive). It does not have any impact on the amount of space in the array => it's used solely for parity. Some say this means you "lose" the space on the parity drive ... I'd disagree -- you're gaining fault tolerance, and the price for that is one disk drive.
