What split level should I choose?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm about to transfer my movie & TV show collections from my old server to the new unRAID server and I'm curious about which split level I should use.

I would like to have a Share called Media, where my movies, TV show etc folders are.

This is the structure i have now and would like to keep.

Media

    Movies
         Iron Man
             (Movie-file, images etc.)

    TV Shows
          Sons of Anarchy
               Season 1
                     (Videofile, images etc.)
                Season 2....

I've given the thought about just writing to disk-shares and have a read only share for my other applications, but i don't know if that is the best option either..

any tips info would be great!

Make separate shares for TV and Movies. Movies level 1 and TV level 2.

Hi and thanks for the reply dgaschk!

Make separate shares for TV and Movies. Movies level 1 and TV level 2.

That would work out nice yes, but i dont get the share "media". So I red up on the unRAID wiki and saw that split level 0 is what I was after! Thanks for the response anyway :)

0 would work if you manually create the top level directories on every disk. No new sub-directories under the ones you manually create will split.

To put it another way. If you want Movies on every disk then you have to create Movies on every disk. If you want the different seasons of Sons of Anarchy to be split on different disks then you have to create Sons of Anarchy directories on each disk you want to be used.

the other question you need to ask yourself is if you want TV and movies under one share.  I started with 2 shares back when, but then realized it was better to have one share, videos and then under there, DVD, blu-ray and TV.  This keeps all items on all disks, but each movie is on one disk.  All seasons for a given show remain on one disk, etc.  So, to answer your question, I think we need to know how you want things split across your disks.

You mention you want a specific layout and I think you can have that with any split level, I think it comes down more to how you want to split  and keep your files across your disks.

All seasons on one disk, all episodes for a single season spread across all disks, etc.
