Got a question ?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm new to this whole un RAID thing. I just purchased a MD-1510/LI

Server from LIME.  I have 6 1.5 TB drives I'll put in this server. My question is How do you get Data from a Desktop PC to the Server?  Can I run a USB Cable from the Desktop to the PC and leave it connected forever. I may not be able to get a USB cable that long what are my other options as I will be backing up my Blu Ray collection.

Sorry if this is a basic question.

After the server is setup (shares, allocation methods, eetc), transfer your files over your network from your desktop(s) to the unraid server.

I ave 6 TB worth of data. How long will this take?

in a word.....awhile. (that maybe 2 words).

To speed up the process, you can **copy** the information without parity enabled then build the parity after the transfer is complete.  Be sure all your information is intact and functional before you delete it off the desktop pc and you should be set.

There is no way to transfer the data from an external hard drive?

Put in 5 of the drives as data drives.... no parity yet.

Copy over the LAN, and you will get about 1 GB /min.

Five days later or so, you will be done.

Then add the 6th drive as parity.  After parity is built, you are done.

Technically, yes you can directly mount an external USB drive on unRAID and copy, but you won't gain any speed doing it that way.
