October 13, 201312 yr Running 5.0 Stable When I first setup my box it would stream 1080p media no problem. Eventually it stopped doing that and I could get away with 720p at best. I did a fresh install when 5.0 stable was released. I was excited to see that it was right back to its snappy self, streaming 1080p perfectly. After a few days it went back to its slow down. I also have intermittent issues with my sabnzbd downloads. Immediately after the 5.0 install it was downloading at the max of my ISP bandwidth, again after a couple of days it slowed down to half of that, or sometimes as low as 100kbs. It did similar things before the upgrade to 5.0 stable also. The plugins I use are: Simplefeatures - GUI only Sabnzbd Couchpotato Sickbeard Log file is to big to attach, I have added a dropbox link. THanks for looking https://db.tt/MX0dHDjs
October 16, 201312 yr Author I am running now with no plugins, still the same issues. Should I try a fresh install? Could it be a drive issue? Thanks for your suggestions.
October 16, 201312 yr Author Hi thanks, here is the output: Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:22:ff:bb:54 inet addr:192.168.0.150 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:15096286 errors:0 dropped:29 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:16526738 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:3868192094 (3.6 GiB) TX bytes:617332060 (588.7 MiB) Interrupt:41 Base address:0x2000
October 16, 201312 yr What is the network topology? Completely describe the network path from server to client.
October 18, 201312 yr Author @dgaschk I have attached a diagram of my network, there are other things attached to the netgear routers such as TV, DVD player and Stereo Receiver. I left them out of the drawing so that it wouldnt be too cluttered. @mr-hexen with Ethtool eth0 I get: -bash: Ethtool: command not found Thanks guys
October 18, 201312 yr Author Thanks, I googled how to install and saw that it is included in unmenu, which I do have so I ran it from there and got this output: NIC info (from ethtool) Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Advertised pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 10Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 0 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: on MDI-X: Unknown Supports Wake-on: pumbg Wake-on: d Current message level: 0x00000033 (51) Link detected: yes NIC driver info (from ethtool -i) driver: r8168 version: 8.036.00-NAPI firmware-version: bus-info: 0000:02:00.0
October 18, 201312 yr You seem to be running at 10mb/s. That is a bit slow. Your router and network card support higher. Maybe check cabling and try ethtool again with a new one. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
October 18, 201312 yr The 10M Ethernet connection needs to be fixed. It should be at least 100 and preferably 1000. 10M will limit streaming as your seeing. 100M should work fine. If the issue persists on a 100M or 1000M connection then eliminate the WIFI hop between the client and server. Use a very long CAT6 cable or move the client and/or server closer together and test performance.
October 18, 201312 yr Author Went and bought a Cat6 550mhz cable today. Ran the test again and got this : NIC info (from ethtool) Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Advertised pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 0 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: on MDI-X: Unknown Supports Wake-on: pumbg Wake-on: d Current message level: 0x00000033 (51) Link detected: yes NIC driver info (from ethtool -i) driver: r8168 version: 8.036.00-NAPI firmware-version: bus-info: 0000:02:00.0 Ethernet config info (from ifconfig) eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:22:ff:bb:54 inet addr:192.168.0.150 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:49270 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:50168 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:22605107 (21.5 MiB) TX bytes:22427281 (21.3 MiB) Interrupt:41 Base address:0xe000 Thanks very much for helping with this. I havent tested streaming or sab downloads yet but I think this should be a big improvement! I didnt realize that Cat5e was that far behind! I will edit as solved when I am able to test everything.
October 18, 201312 yr I didnt realize that Cat5e was that far behind! It's not. 5e is plenty capable of gigabit. You had a bad cable, or it wasn't plugged in all the way.
October 19, 201312 yr You said the server seems to slow down after a period of time. I would run that command once a day to keep an eye on it and make sure it stays where it is now. It could very well be that the network card degrades the connection over time.
October 24, 201312 yr Author Thanks, streaming speeds have been perfect since the cable switch. I guess it was faulty then, thank you for clearing that up JonathanM. My Sab downloads have still been sporatic. anywhere from 2.5mbs down to 188kbs last night. Ethtool is still reporting 1000mbs.
