October 14, 201312 yr I am building an esxi 5.1 box. (First time playing with esxi) my plan is to have Unraid as my primary media storage server and use windows server 2012 essentials for vpn access. My question is if I install speedfan on the wse2012 machine and pass through a pcie raid card to Unraid. Will speedfan be able to see the temperatures from the drives connected to raid card? The idea being that speedfan will take to my bigng fan controller and turn the fans off when not needed. Sam
October 14, 201312 yr I can't speak to that configuration, but I do get temperature readings in unraid from the m1505 that I'm passing through. As far as I know, if the device you pass through works, all of the features should work as well. Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos.
October 14, 201312 yr Author Thanks for the reply. I can get the readings in Unraid that's not a problem. The key to this is going to be the cross vm business. Card and drives in Unraid, speed fan in windows.
October 14, 201312 yr I can't say with absolute certainty; but according to the ESXi pass-through rules, it seems fairly certain it will NOT work. You can pass the same device through to multiple VM's, but only ONE at a time can be active ... so once a VM is started and gains "control" of a device, any other VM that uses the same device will not have it available => since I don't have ESXI set up, I can't say for certain whether or not the 2nd VM would simply fail to start; or would start but give a warning that the device was "unavailable" (as it does with assigned devices in VMware Workstation in a similar case). There are, however, several fan speed control scripts posted on this forum that would let you do this from within UnRAID (i.e. without using SpeedFan as your controller).
