It time to upgrade my current unraid server that is getting slow, hiccups in media play, slow directory listings (freezes)

The playback is on a Mac-Mini and Apple-TV with plex running on the Mac-Mini.

When doing simultaneous playback on MAc-Mini and Apple-TV there is a lot of hiccups on the Apple-TV

 

Current Server

Unraid V5.0 final

1 Parity

7 Data ( 1,5 and 2TB drives)

Asus P5K motherboard with a Core2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4 GHz

4 GB Ram

 

Getting the right MB is the biggest problem as the availability for most of the MB mentioned in this forum is not that great here in Norway.

At the moment i'm looking at a Asus F1A75-V Pro MB with a AMD Fusion A8-3870 cpu i will go to at least 8 GB of Ram

I will be installing a AOC-SASLP-MV8 (already purchased) to for further expanding the number of disks.

Also want to add a cache drive to the new config.

 

Is this a combo on which i can run SAB, SB and Plex to stream to Mac-mini and Apple-Tv without the hiccups is playback

 

Any thoughts are appreciated.

A Core 2 6600 should already have plenty of "horsepower" for what you want to do.

 

Have you tried simply installing the AOC-SASLP-MV8 in your current system, and connecting your drives to the 4 chipset ports plus that board?

 

 

No i have not tried that.

I have the extra drives now connected to a Promise SATA300-TX4 card.

 

I want to make my new server as future proof as possible and possible integrate the contents of my second server into this one.

...so, I gather in your current setup the bottleneck is the mac-mini and you want to move some apps, like plex, to the unRAID server?

As gary already pointed out, your current CPU should give you some improvement when moving plex away from the mac-mini.

This is what I'd do/test first.

There is no use in creating a new build and find out that the reason/cause for doing so is actually not in unRAID itself...risk for a waste of money, IMHO.

4 drives connected to a PCI controller (the Promise card) is a major bottleneck.    I'd definitely change to the AOC-SASLP-MV8 card BEFORE buying any more hardware.    There's an excellent chance that will resolve your issue.
