In need of help to find the bottleneck in streaming movies over SMB

Featured Replies

I have 2 unraid servers and a QNAP NAS on my network.

I want to play movies from these servers and NAS on a Popcorn Hour mediaplayer.

An unraid 5.0 final server and the QNAP NAS are on HP Procurve 1810-24 switch. The mediaplayer is connected over a Netgear switch and a MOCA adapter to the HP procurve switch.  Playing movies from the QNAP NAS works great: both mkv and BD rips play fluently without any problems. Playing movies from the unraid server is impossible: constant pausing and buffering.

How to find the problem? How to measure network performance between server and mediaplayer?

Please advice me on how to tackle this problem.

Are you using the same file sharing protocol on both? Is this an SMB vs NFS issue? NFS works much better on low powered linux devices, like a Popcorn Hour.

NFS should be better if both hosts are linux based. Describe the network completely.

Please advice me on how to tackle this problem.

Take a look at my post here.  It's over three years old, but might give you some pointers.

Not necessarily. With the C-200 and unRAID, NFS doesn't work at all and SMB is flawless. NFS stutters and buffers, it's unusable.

NFS seems to work better. When it connects. I have to try 3 times to connect from my PCH to my unraid 5.0 final server. On the first attempts the PCH comes back "no content found". This doesn't happen when connecting to my Qnap NAS.

Doe this occur when the disks are spun up?

Might well be. Just strange, to me, that it only happens with NFS not with Samba. But I don't have any knowledge about the matter.

which PCH?

which PCH?

A400.

See it happen on a Dune Base 3.0 too.

what NIC is in the unraid server?
