Question on share config

Featured Replies

Howdy all.

I just upgraded my 2 year old array from 4.7 to 5.0. I now to add a 3 TB drive as the new parity drice re-use the old 2TB parity and I have some questions about shares.

I have 8 drives: parity, disk1-7.

In my old (4.7) setup, I had two shares:

Videos and Backup1.

On my 4.7 install,

  Videos was set thus:

      Included disks:

      Excluded disks: disk4

  Backup1 was set this:

      Included disks: disk4

      Excluded disks:

Now I will replace the 2 TB parity drive with a 3 TB drive.  I will then move the old 2 TB (ex-parity) drive to a new sata port andI would like to make it the "new" Backup1 drive.

Question 1:

Since "Videos" is set to "all drives except disk4" in the config, when I add the new drive, will it be automatically added to the "Videos" share? Or should I change the config of the "Videos" share to this config:

Videos:

      Included disks: disk1, disk2, disk3, disk5, disk6, disk7

      Excluded disks: disk4

So that, when I add the new drive, it is not automatically added to the "Videos" share?

Question 2:

When I add the old 2 TB parity drive back into the array,  I want to copy the data on the old Backup1 share to that drive and make it the new Backup1 share.  I am unclear how to accomplish this.  One way I thought of was to add the drive, copy the data from Backup1 share, delete the Backup1 share.  Create a new Backup1 share with the new drive, then add the old Backup1 disk to the Videos share.  Does this sound right?

Thanks for any help.

You don't want to list BOTH "includes" and "excludes" ==> just list one or the other.  If you list "included" drives, then any drive not listed won't be included.    If you list "excluded" drives, than all drives except those will be included.

As for how to re-set the backups share ...

After you've finished the migration (i.e. replaced parity and then added the old parity to the array), simply change the "included" drive for the backups share to the new drive (the old parity drive).  All future writes to that share will then be to that drive and NOT the old drive that held the share.  But the share will still SHOW both the contents of the new drive AND the old drive (since it contains a "Backup" folder on it).    If you also want to move all those contents, so the backup share is only on the new drive, simply move them from the old drive to the new drive [e.g. from \\Tower\disk4\backups  to \\Tower\diskX\backups ] and once they're all moved delete the backups folder from disk4.
