October 31, 201312 yr Hello I just installed PMS v0.9.8.10.215-020456b (from plex.com) on my unRAID server. It will play everything fine when I am using my home network. I am at work now testing out the Plex Web using a VPN to connect to my home network. Plex will play videos that have AAC audio but ALL other files like DTS or Dolby digital audio give me the "Cannot load M3U8: 404 not found" error. Someone from the plex forum said that some NAS systems do not allow transcoding. Has anyone had this issue? unRAID: 5.0 CPU: Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz RAM: 4 GB
October 31, 201312 yr There is no known issues with transcoding from unRAID, it should work fine assuming your CPU is powerful enough for what you are trying to transcode. You said you're connected via VPN, so it may be that your work PC is seen as a local PC and it is direct playing rather than transcoding. Perhaps try using MyPlex rather than the VPN connection and see how that goes.
October 31, 201312 yr Author I installed the PMC on my laptop and turned on off the VPN and logged into MyPlex (I setup port fowarding yesterday) and it shows my folders but it just says connecting when I click them and it never loads the files? Any thoughts?
October 31, 201312 yr Reconnect via VPN and check MyPlex is still working via Plex/Web. Also, don't use the old PMC.. if you have a Plexpass, use the newer PHT client, or go directly to Plex/Web via the myplex website and play media that way. It's under Servers.. click on your server and choose Plex/Web.
October 31, 201312 yr Author I logged into the VPN and checked that MyPlex and working and it seems to be fine (see the screenshot). I then log into the MyPlex website and it says that the server is Unavailable but if I connect back to the VPN then it says connected... I am assuming my port forwarding is messed up?
November 1, 201312 yr Author Alright I figured out the port forwarding problems and that is all fixed. I can only stream AAC 2.0 audio files to my PLEX/WEB app from away from my home network. All other types of media fail and I believe this is due to the transcoder not working? Is there a way to test to see if it is working? ALSO, can someone please confirm that unRAID can transcode and play any sort of media types from an external IP address through the my.plexapp.com site?
November 1, 201312 yr Author OH I AM AN IDIOT! I had a space before my Temp directory path! Plex is transcoding just fine now!
November 2, 201312 yr Glad you worked it out. Yes plex transcodes all supported formats to external ip connected devices. TheWombat
