October 31, 201312 yr I'm in the planning phase of my unRaid server right now, and I've got a couple of questions about the way everyone is using applications. For years now, I've been running all of my apps (sabnzbd,sickbeard,couchpotato,headphones,lazylibrarian,transmission,plex,etc...) on a separate server which is hooked into my DAS. I'm going to move all of the data off of the DAS and onto the NAS, and then remount the share to my server via NFS where the old drive was. I'm running everything on OS X right now and I like being able to take advantage of launchd's automation and keepalive functionality to keep all of my services running and updated. My intention is to buy a couple of Intel NUCs, load them with ESXi, and then export a datastore share to them over NFS from unRaid. Then, I'll start moving all of my services into virtual systems. However, it seems like a lot of people are just doing everything on their unRaid box. It's kind of where I am now with my OS X setup, but even there, with pretty good hardware, I see a performance hit. I would think that you want your unRaid box to JUST do storage, and do it well. Now, not counting media apps (which I've already decided to host on separate hardware), what kind of performance hit do you take from running additional apps? The only things I could see running would be things like reiserfsck, health checks, and other data-related scripts in cron.
November 1, 201312 yr If you run some stuff the web admin loads a little slower. At one time I was running a BOINC server with both processors running at 100% and there were no media serving issues at all.
November 1, 201312 yr My unraid runs CP, SB, SABNZbd, transmission, MySQL and Flexget. I'm seriously thinking of moving the apps off unraid. Not because of performance issues but because there is a healthier base of developers making the scripts work in an integrated manner for Linux platforms. Influencer is doing a great job bug he's a one man band and was out of action for 8 months. I would feel better changing my setup to a pure unraid only virtual machine and a Linux VMware with the other apps.

I would feel better changing my setup to a pure unraid only virtual machine and a Linux VMware with the other apps. and the development base is another reason I'd be slightly concerned with running on the unRaid platform. As of right now, I have all of those apps updating nightly through github pulls, and it's a really easy process. Even though slackware is still Linux and easy to work with, I like the idea of having a dedicated system. I've seen some of these Python apps bring my server to it's knees trying to process through terabytes of data. I'd hate for it to be my storage brought to it's knees and open up the possibility for data loss.
