I'm building my first unRAID NAS. Last night, I started with 3 drives, a parity and two data. When the data drives came online, the drives were only formatted. I got my pro key this morning and applied it. I also added a 4th data drive. When I added the 4th drive, I had to first "clear" the drive (it is running now). Odd I thought that now, I'd get the clear option but I didn't get it for the first two data drives that I added. Why didn't I get the clear option for the first two drives? Was it because the parity drive wasn't completed yet (finished this morning)? Do I have to manually clear the first two drives?

You only have to clear a drive when you're adding it to a parity-protected array.

 

As you've already surmised, when you first created the array, it wasn't parity protected until the initial parity sync was completed => so the first two drives didn't require clearing.
