November 13, 201312 yr my tower is called marks_media. I only have smb enabled under shared in the sidebar of finder on my mac there are two devices that show up. one is marks_media and the other is MarksMedia-SMB. not sure where the MarksMedia-SMB is coming from. I don't have anything named MarksMedia currently. The shares under both the devices are identical. Is there anyway to remove the MarksMedia-SMB so it doesn't show up?
November 13, 201312 yr marks_media is the AFP share from the server. MarksMedia-SMB is the samba (windows) share. You only want to turn it off if you are a Mac only house though. Windows machines, among other things, browse the server via samba. Just go into Settings -> SMB on the server and turn SMB off. That will get rid of it.
November 14, 201312 yr Mac's use an open sourced signaling mechanism to find devices on your network. SMB is slightly different. both can run at the same time....no harm done. if you setup a share with AFP, but NOT SMB, you'll see the share in the TOWER list in Finder, but not in the TOWER-SMB list. (for example, I have my TIMEMACHINE share available ONLY with AFP...there's nothing I can do with in via samba anyway.) November 14, 201312 yr Author Ok I was just confused because I have AFP turned off. In addition the how the SMB share was showing up is in a format that I've never entered (MarkMedia) vs marks_media which I did name the device.
November 15, 201312 yr Not really, no, can't be turned off. Perhaps in whatever comes after 'Mavericks'. Meantime, AFP has to continue to run for those who use TimeMachine.
November 29, 201312 yr Update to 5.0.3. in FINDER PREFERENCES / SIDEBAR / turn OFF the Bonjour setting. Voila! Only listed once
