unRaid 64 question

Featured Replies

So when unRaid 64 does come out, well I be able to run it on my current hardware and what benifit will I get?

unRAID Pro 5.0 • Norco 4220 • Supermicro MBD-X7SBE • Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz 4MB L2 Cache • Kingston 4GB • SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 • CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W

It should work on a X7SBE and Q8300.  As to advantages - since it is 64 bit it will not have to use PAE to access memory above the 3-3.5GB mark so that should make the unRAID kernel more stable.  Also it would likely remain just as stable if you were to go to 8GB.  Supposedly the worry about > 4GB of memory in unRAID is gone but I have seen posts that suggest there are still the odd problem that the 4095 parameter used upon unRAID load fixes.

So when unRaid 64 does come out, well I be able to run it on my current hardware ...

Yes

... what benifit will I get?

If you're just using UnRAID as a NAS, then probably none (since you only have 4GB installed).  If you have other add-ons that can take advantage of a larger address space, you can add more memory without any issues (which, as Bob noted above, some folks have had problems with when using PAE).

thanks, so if I run applications like SB, CP SAB it should help but straight unraid would see very little improvment correct?

Correct -- but only if you install more memory for them to take advantage of.
