November 17, 201312 yr I've recently moved to Mexico, and left much of my stuff in storage until I get settled. My unRAID box only has DVI & S-Video outputs, and the only monitors I have access to are either HDMI or VGA, so I can't connect anything currently to the unRAID box to see the output when starting up. I had it running fine yesterday, but we lost power here, and I'm not sure the UPS software was running, so I think the unRAID box had an unclean shutdown. In fact, the power was less than full power for a while, and I wonder if it might have resulted in a problem with the unRAID box, although I'm not sure. I've restarted the unRAID box a couple of times, but never hear a beep when it powers up (I used to hear one), and I cannot get to the machine thru the network. i put the USB into a windows laptop and restarted, and it will start unRAID just fine, so it's not a thumb drive problem, it must be related to the actual unRAID box/hardware. Any ideas on what might be the problem, and how to resolve without having a monitor connected? I'll eventually find a DVI to HDMI adaptor, but it will be several days before I can make it to a large city where I'm likely to find one. I know this is a long shot, but I figured I'd ask if anyone has any ideas on how to proceed. thanks!
November 17, 201312 yr Don't know what your access to cable sources is, but just in case you weren't aware, you can easily connect your DVI output to an HDMI input ... they are electrically compatible, so no converter is necessary -- just a cable that connects the appropriate pins. Something like this: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2405&seq=1&format=2 Without the ability to see what (if anything) is displayed, it's not really possible to do a good troubleshooting session. If you happen to have a spare power supply, you could try that ... but if you had UPS protection, that shouldn't be an issue.
November 17, 201312 yr Without the monitor you'll have to look for other telltale signs of normal operation. When the unit is powered up can you toggle the Num-Lock key and get any indication from the keyboard that the function is working? You might have to connect a PS/2 style keyboard to see this. Are there any LED's on the motherboard indicating power? Does the LED for hard disk activity flash indicating HD activity? Motherboards usually have some sort of beep codes to indicate low level errors or problems. You'll have to consult your mobo's documentation. With the power off pull the memory sticks out and restart get it beeping. That's about all I can think of at the moment. Do you have a TV with a S-Video connection (and a cable)?
November 17, 201312 yr How about a DIV to HDMI or VGA adaptor, I have about 5 of each lying around from buying video cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200551 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
November 17, 201312 yr Author yeah, I have several of those also, in storage, 1200 miles from where I'm sitting right now I have a friend here with an internet cafe and all 6 of his monitors are VGA, which is not an option on the unRAID box. I'll have to head into the nearest big city this week and see if I can find someplace that sells a cable or adaptor (and also a keyboard). I was hoping changing the location of the USB thumb drive would cause the machine to boot from it properly, but that didn't work either. I've got a couple more people I can ask about a monitor I can borrow, but prospects are looking pretty slim right now. No TV's with s-video either, sadly. Life in another country is a bit more 'complicated' than life in the US.
