Icy Box IB-545SSK

Hi,

I recently upgraded my server to use 3x Icy Box IB-545SSK 5 in 3 cages (http://www.raidsonic.de/en/products/backplanes.php?we_objectID=7961), but they are REALLY loud.

Does anyone have any experiance replacing the fans on these with aftermarket fans that are any quieter? I'm interested in the type of connector the fans use and clearance the clearance they have. The Icy Box site lists the fans that are currently installed as 60x60x10mm and does not state the connector.

So, the question is, can i buy 6 Noctua NF-A6x25 FLX fans (http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=48&lng=en), which are 60x60x25, and install them in this cage?

If not, does anyone have a recommendation for a quiet fan that will fit in there?

Thanks

Chris

I have the 4in3 icey box drive cage but they use an 80mm fan by 15mm or 20mm can't remember.  They also have a non standard fan connector.  This is what I uses to connect the new fans to the drive cage.

3-Pin to 3-Pin 2.50mm Fan Adapter Cable

The only issue I had is that I had to switch the yellow wire with on of the other wires (I think it was the red wire) on the 2.50mm connector to get them to work.  Just pull the pin out of the smaller connector and swap it with the other wire.

Thanks for the heads up on the non standard connecters . I just pulled one of the cages out of my server to see exactly what was going on. This model is using some kind of 2 pin fan connector, and the clearance looks to be at most 15mm.

If i can find the relevant converter for the connecters (suggestions welcome!) I'm just going to mount the new fans outside of the casing.

Could it be one of these

Could you post a pic of the fan header?

also depending if those have a fan failure alarm on them (I had a cage that did that very annoying if you want to unplug the fan for the header) you could just run the fans off the motherboard or power supply.

10mm - not very common (and not very effective --> high rev needed)

3000 rpm - really loud

I can recommend noiseblocker but they don't have 60x10.

5in3 cages are really crowded and if populated with the wrong drives (server grade)

you'll have big problems in running them at reasonable temps without noise.

I unsoldered the wiring from the old fans and put them on the new ones - low cost, perfect fit.  ;)

Perhaps you can do some modding to fit more common fans?

What I would recommend if you have the room behind the cage is take out the old fan and mount the new fan on the outside of the cage using the screw holes from the old fans.  Just connect the new fans to the motherboard or power supply using molex connectors.  This will add depth to the drive cage, but you can use any 60mm fan you want.

I was starting to think the same thing - it looks like I have enough space behind the cages to mount the fans externally.

I've also just checked whether the cages have an alarm if the fans aren't connected - they don't. It just makes one of the LEDs on the front red rather than green.

Thanks for the input guys.
