Hello,

while renovating my basement i had to shutdown and move the unraid server. I shutdown the server properly ... thru the command line. But now when i turn the server back on, Disk 1 is now saying that it is unformatted. The unraid is now also extremely slow.

 

While typing this, all of the sudden disk 2 icon when red with an exponential read and write count...

 

I am running unRaid pro 5.0 - with 3 drives, 1 parity and 2 data.

 

 

Any thoughts?

yes,

 

DO NOT press the FORMAT button.

 

unformatted simply indicates the disk could not be mounted.  It might just have some file-system corruption that needs fixing.

 

A red disk 2 indicator is not a good sign.  It is a disk where a "write" failed, so it is off-line.

 

Step 1.  stop the array, power down, re-seat the cables to the drives.  Odds are one cable came lose when you moved the server.

I just unplugged everything. plugged everything back in. Now when I go to start the array, the icon for disk 2 is blue. Should i start the array?

 

 

Jonathann, i believe i just typed shutdown -h now .... (which in hindsight probably isn't correct as it doesn't shut the array down properly)

 

I have been using this for a couple of years, once I got it going I never touch it so I am not very familiar with things / troubleshooting.

Shutting down in this manner is not correct and will cause all sorts of issues like the one your having.

if all the other disks are "green" then yes, you can re-construct onto disk2.

Not the best way to stop the array, and in fact, almost the worst. (about equal to pulling the plug)

Nor on basic start-up/shutdown apparently :-)  Always use the unRAID management cnsole to STOP the array first.  Then you can powerdown.

Saying all that, I just tried turning the machine on and now it wont get past the initialization of one of the drives. I give up for tonight out of frustration (my snowblower blew up tonight (oil everywhere) as i was about to plow the driveway) So before I break more things I will attempt to fix things tomorrow.

 

But if I were to get the machine to boot without disk 2 and replace it with a new drive will it be able to rebuild or am i basically just accepting that i am loosing the data on the drive?

I reverted back to a backup from October. Disk 2 is back to green but Disk 1 is still saying that it is unformatted.

I am trying to get my important files off unRaid drives however it is extremely slow. It will copy files but stop after a bit the speed drops down to zero and  then i have to click retry. For the most part it is working. On the console screen I am getting an REISERFS error.

 

I guess next step is to run the reiserfsck util on my md2 drive..

 

any other thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated!

That is exactly how you should proceed.  Because of the reiserfs error, the disk cannot be mounted.

Would that be the reason why the parity is slow? I attempted to do a parity check last night but it was beyond a crawl

Parity is calculated at a much lower level than the file-system.  It can be calculated/check if there was a file-system present, or not.

 

However, if there are disk errors (even lower level than the parity check) then the constant re-tries to access a disk will slow things down.

Well that was completely disappointing. I am unable to run reiserfs on md1 (the one that is unformatted), ran it on md2, told me I had to rebuild the tree.. attempted that.

When I rebooted the machine, now both disk1 and disk2 say they are unformatted and it appears that I have lost all my data as I no longer have any shares.

 

Parity is attempting to run, but it is telling me that it will take 395days to complete for 2tb...

 

 

So give up and format and start over?

Still haven't had any luck with this.... Is there any way of getting the information off these drives?

 

 

The drives are in bad shape possibly due to repeated improper shutdowns. sdc is not responding. The other 2 drives have unreadable sectors. Unraid can rebuild a single failed drive if all of the other drives are readable.

 

Power-cycle the system and try to get a SMART report from sdc. There are several Windows utilities or Live boot CDs, e.g. systemRescueCD, that should be able to recover most or all of sda. Unless sdc starts responding it's gone. sdb holds parity bits so there's nothing there to recover.  Attempt recovery on sda (and possibly sdc), if desired, before taking the next step.

 

The Current_Pending_Sector RAW_VALUE counts the number of unreadable sectors. This value must be zero in order for a disk to be used in unRAID. Run pre-clear on the disks repeatedly until the Current_Pending_Sector RAW_VALUE is zero. It should only take one pass but a second successful pass is a good indication that is will stay at zero.  If the Pending sector count does not go to zero then RMA the drive. sdb is old and may fail before the pending count goes to zero. sdb should be replaced ASAP.
