Any easy way to merger duplicate folders on multiple drives

Featured Replies

I've been going through my movie files and my split level has been being ignored.  I have no idea why since my split level is set to 1, but I'll post about that once I fix my folders.

Out of 813 movies only a handful are relegated to a single drive like I wanted.  Most are across two drives and some three.  This seems like a massive task to manually correct this.  Is there some easier way to merge the duplicate/triplicate movie folders?

As long as you have backups, it's fairly simple.  Just delete them all; then copy them back from the backups ... copying to the disk share instead of the UnRAID share, to force what you want on each of the disks.

If you don't have current backups; then use one spare 2-4TB drive on a PC, and copy as many movies from the UnRAID share to that drive as fit (the segments from the individual disks will all be included).    That will free up a significant amount of space on your server.  So you can now copy a few movies from the UnRAID share; delete them; and copy them back to a disk share ... using which ever disk shares have the most space as you do this.    Just keep repeating it until everything except the initial large collection is done;  then copy those back to whichever disks they fit on.

By far, the simplest approach is to just use your backups.

I've noticed the same thing happen too from time to time, I use MC to move directories recursively from one drive to another.

Thanks for the suggestion guys.  I hadn't thought of that.  In the end I decided to copy the directory listings as text and paste that into an Excel spreadsheet.  Using a formula I got the spreadsheet to list each movie folder and the drive(s) it was on.  Then I just went down the list and manually merged the folders.  Much more work than your guys' suggestion, but much faster (finished in around 10 hours).  Especially since I didn't have a spare drive to copy to.

Now I'm just curious to see what happens from here on out.  I don't know why unRAID wasn't honoring my split level settings.  I really hope this won;t continue to be a problem.  Anyone else have this problem?

Could you provide details of the share and split level? You mentioned split level 1, not sure that is what you meant to use.

I have a share named "Movies" and within that a folder for each movie that contains the movie files.  I want the share "Movies" to span multiple drives, but everything beneath that to be contained on the same drive.

How do the files get moved to the share?

Different ways.  I manually copy the actual movie file to a disk share.  The problem seems to arise with exteraneous files such as nfo files and different artwork.  I use Ember Media Manager to create nfo's and download fanart.  I also use the XBMC addon Artwork Downloader to download various other artwork.  Both should be downloading to the respective movie's folder in the Movie share.  Shouldn't the split level be preventing either from creating a duplicate movie folder?

If you copy from another location on an array disk to the share then the files will stay on that same array disk regardless of the split level setting.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. All the files are being copied to the share from outside the array.

I write all my files (similar metadata stuff too) to the cache first and have never had your issue. Something writing the files is likely causing it. Are you sure you didn't point a program to a disk share?
