Single file not span across drives?

Featured Replies

I'm on 4.5.6 (I suppose I should make the effort to upgrade).

I run out of disk spakce trying to backup my PC to the Unraid Server. None of the drives in teh box have over 500GB, and my PC is just over 500GB. Always says running out of space. Can a single file not span to other drives? I was thinking a Raid box would span files across drives.

A RAID box does span files across drive. unRAID does not and we like it this way. By not spanning, each drive is individually recoverable in the case of catastrophic failure.

Doh!  ::)

UnRaid...yeah. I guess I wasn't thinking. It's not a Raid box.

Hmmm...I guess there is no solution for me to use that server as a backup system.

You could:

- Use a backup program that lets you split the backup files at a specific size. :)

- Manually create two archives (zip, rar, 7z, ...) that are less than 500 MB in size.

- Backup without compressing to a single file.

Been a while but sure Clonezilla allowed me to do this. It saves the image in multiple parts if memory serves. It's been a while though

Add a new data drive that is dedicated to backups. A 1T drive will work well for a 500G client.
