iTunes moving media outside of the proper folders

Featured Replies

I can't understand why, but whenever I open up iTunes it moves files outside of the "music" directory and into the "iTunes Media" directory.

The files it decides to move are random and it does not matter if I try to play or edit any of them, it happens as soon as iTunes is opened.

Any idea why this occurs and how I can prevent it? Things were fine until recently - I cannot correlate with any changes to unRAID, but figured I'd post to see if anyone has similar experience.

Sounds more like iTunes preferences and not unRAID.

Perhaps from auto-updating with the latest iTunes?

Does this help:

In particular, the 'Keep ITunes Media organized', and 'Copy file to iTunes...' links?

Dale, thanks for your reply. Reading my original post I don't think I was clear on my issue.

Since iTunes 9 was released I have had my media "reorganized" and consolidated according to the "organize library" option in iTunes. My music library looked like this:

../iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/<artist name>/<album name>/<track>

What has been happening recently when I launch iTunes is that it starts moving my music to this structure:

../iTunes/iTunes Media/<artist name>/<album name>/<track>

iTunes is moving files automatically outside of my "music" folder into the root "iTunes Media" folder even though I have asked it to keep my folder organized / consolidated and have run "organize library" several times.

hmmm...

So Apple is really good about explaining how things are supposed to work, but not so great at unwinding troubles.

It sounds like there's an iTunes preference setting that isn't quite right. You might get a better answer on the apple forums.

I am fairly certain the issue is with iTunes - after turning off the "keep..." option the issue has stopped; however, I had to disable functionality in the app (functionality which I use).

Here's hoping the next update of iTunes resolves the issue.

Ok, this is interesting... perhaps it is related to unRAID.

I have the "keep..." setting disabled; however, when I drag media into iTunes to add to my library it STILL places the media in the wrong folder; however, it does not do this with movies. Perhaps an issue with split levels and drive space? I'm grasping at straws here.

Is your iTunes library accessed with a SHARE, or using a named disk?

Mounted volume via OS X.

From your Mac, you've connecting to the server somehow. (cmd+K, or Go/Connect_to_Server)

Then in iTunes Prefs, under the 'Advanced Preferences' tab, you specify where your iTunes library is located.

What does it show as the path to the iTunes library?

/Volumes/<unraid share>/iTunes/iTunes Media

I'm stumped at how to stop that, autumnwalker.

Try this thread over at Apple:

Music Folder and Media Folder - How do I combine?

https://discussions.apple.com/message/23326844#23326844

The thread talks about how to put things BACK, but I don't spot the way to STOP it from recurring.

...it may be there and I just don't see it, but its a headstart to a solution.

Thanks, I have run the "organize library" several times to "put things back" and if it works (and doesn't crash) it starts moving things right back out again once it finishes organizing.

That's bizarre.

Its gotta be an iTunes issue.

Try posting it on the Apple forums.

I'm curious, too.
