November 30, 201312 yr my current server has 10 (filled) HDD bays. Instead of buying a whole new 20/24 bay server class case, is it possible to add one of these to an existing server? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132016 If so, how would rebuild speeds be affected?
November 30, 201312 yr Your sig says, "Impatiently waiting for HD prices to drop"! Makes me wonder, though, just how big are your existing harddrives? The expansion case is $200+ ... would it perhaps be cheaper (and require less power) to swap in some higher capacity drives? 3TB are about $110 and 4TB are $140. Its a little bit of work to move the files back from a swapped out drive...but might be all around worth it.
November 30, 201312 yr Author It's true, I am impatiently waiting on the price and availability of 6tb hard drives to drop. And you're correct, I am in the process of upgrading about 1/2 the drives in the array over the month of December, it just seems that my ability to accumulate digital stuff is faster then my ability to upgrade hard drives, lol. Also, gosh I hate to see 1 and 2 tb drives just sitting around. Such a waste.
November 30, 201312 yr I hate to see 1 and 2 tb drives just sitting around. Such a waste. Use them for backups. You should have a complete backup of your server anyway ... older drives are very good for this purpose => just write them in a docking station; then store the drives.
