24 Drive Case Options

Featured Replies

Other than purchasing a Norco 4224 what other case options are there?

Thank you.

...in the Rackmount 19" Market, there are lots of options.

When you are into a non-rackmount solution, options are very limited.

Look to find cube models PC-D8000 or PC-343B from Lian Li in your part of the world.

Thank you very much. It looks like the Lian-PC is exactly what I was shopping for. Now just to find an online store that has them!

Apologies for invading a thread that isn't mine, but I wanted to ask exactly the same question, yet concerning desktop/rackmount form-factor cases. Just like the OP, I was recommended the Norco 4224, but I find it too expensive for a beginners project. Are the similar cases of similar capacity and same form-factor but cheaper than this one? Is it possible to save money e.g. by getting such case without all the 24 hot-swap drive bays (and/or without other parts) since I would start with only a few drives in the beginning? For example, I found a Supermicro CSE-836 case on eBay but the sellers emphasizes that it comes without most of the hardware (not even LEDs and buttons), but only the case and drive trays. Should I get the case for a few Euros?

How many drives would you start with in the beginning? Do you have old hardware you want to recycle? (full size atx mb, for example, like i did).

The "cheap" way is to get any case that you can fit the amount of hdds you want into. Having hot swap (by which i really mean easy in/out) is nice, but not needed up front. And if you aren't going past the 6 drive limit in the plus licsence, then it really doesn't matter.

In fact, there are a lot of GOOD small form factor cases available these days that make going the exact opposite way of a norco appealing, espically if you are buying new hardware, and can go with the ITX form factor.

But any case you have with a few fans, few good HDD mounting spots, and a new PS (if needed) and you should be good to go.

You can also get this Rosewill RSV-L4500 for $99, is that cheaper than the Norco?

I currently have one 2TB WD Green drive where all my media is stored on. Apart from that I am starting from scratch; no old hardware to recylce.

I want to get a case that can fit as many drives as possible to be prepared for the future. It doesn't have to be exactly 24 drives like the Norco, but should come close (say 15-20 drives). So I think small form factor cases are not an option.

This one looks nice. But, well, I forgot to mention that I am living in Germany where many sweet things you can get from Newegg are not available, Rosewill being one...  ;)

What do you think about this http://www.inter-tech.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=223%3Aipc-4129l&catid=59%3Aipc-19-zoll&Itemid=253〈=en It says "Costumers with a higher demand of drive bays can exchange these HDD-cages for HDD draw outs. So that up to 15x 3,5", 36x 2,5" SAS or 54x 2,5" S-ATA can be mounted into this case." How does that work?

Another option I see: Buying a big tower but turning it round. Are there any big cases which can fit that many drives and can be turned round easily (ie. looking like a rackmount)?

If you are ok with used and have time to possibly wait, you might want to check this http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=21957.msg194646#msg194646

You get a complete working 4U server for about the price of a new 4224.

Of course you would want to make some mods if you can not place it somewhere where the noise doesn't matter.

This are very good servers except for noise, and the fact that they do not support all virtualization functionality. Using it as a baremetal unraid is fine with minimal mods.
