Change USB stick

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

is there any way to change my usb stick for unraid (free version atm). Can i just run the installation script on windows and copy everything from the old stick to the new one?

Or can i just install the new one, and add my HDD's to the "new array" without formatting them at all?

Yes, you can simply initialize another stick and copy your config to it.

The free version doesn't depend on the GUID, so you can move to a different flash unit at will.  In fact, it's a good idea to be sure you're happy with the flash drive you're using before attaching a Plus or Pro license to it, as once that's done you can no longer change flash drives as easily.

ok, thank you. I was trying unraid with just some old usb stick. I bought some new transcend jetflash 600 8gb today and think this would be perfect.

hey,

i downloaded latest unraid, copied everything to the usb stick and use the make bootable script. after this i copied all data from my old stick to this new one and wanted to boot. But boot stuck at this point:

scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access JetFlash Transcend 8GB 8.07 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4

sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 15679488 512-byte logical blocks: (8.02 GB/7.47 GiB)

sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off

sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: disabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DP ... or FUA

sda : sda1

sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk

floppy0: no floppy controllers found

VFS: Insert root floppy and press ENTER

Here i cant type enter or something like that. My NAS hasn't any floppy drive. I can still boot without problems from my old stick

is the USB mode forced to USB-FDD? try changing to USB-HDD.

change from "auto" to "hdd", still the same error :( (even in safe mode)

If I am understanding where the boot hangup is occurring, you will need to mess with settings in the motherboard bios to get system to boot properly. Unless you are seeing the unRaid boot screen menu options - if that's the case I would recommend that you have your config folder with pro.key saved then reformat drive and copy everything back onto it.

I just formatted the new stick, copied everything form the old one and started the boot makeable script. After this unraid was booting right. I get some erros at the start (some slackware server couldn't be found?) - and some problems with my plugins -they are still searching for the old directory (/tmp/...) and not the new one :( (/mnt/user/programs) so i can't install and/or start them yesterday.

Remember the only think you need to copy is the config folder.  Not "Everything"

If you are copying "Everything", you are breaking it.

The safest course is to prepare the flash with the stock distribution. Once the system is able to boot correctly then copy over any add-ons or customizations from the old flash. Booting with a stock distribution will not effect the contents of the HDD.
