OS installation question on new unRAID box

Featured Replies

Hello,  I just got all my parts to put one of these servers together to run Plex on and have an initial install question.  Since everything is new I will need to install drivers for the MB, etc.  Do I need to install Windows on this unRAID box first to install device drivers or not?  I know enough about computers to be scary but the simple things surpass me.  If I install Windows to install the system drivers, Will unRAID still work.  The only thing I need this system for is a unRAID box for PMS just  FYI.  Thanks for any help or info!

Unraid is its own standalone OS. Setup the usb stick and boot from it. That's it.

It does feel weird, not having to install a giant honking OS, doesn't it?

When I first built my unRAID box, I made sure the BIOS was set to use SATA for the hard drives. ('AHCI' with some motherboards.)

I also made the USB key the first boot option, instead of the hard drives.

I don't think either of these is required with unRAID but it made me feel useful.

Yes, Very.  The install instruction of unRAID seem to be straight and simple.  The only thing I was unsure of was if I needed to install any device drivers for this system.  Well wish me luck, It's built now so here comes the start up and unRAID install.

Thanks a bunch!
