[SOLVED] Unraid noob in trouble again

Featured Replies

I've had Unraid 5.0.1 running smoothly for (almost) a month, haven't touched it since I set it up, but today it just died.

I can boot it up and it works fine for a few seconds, then it crashes / shuts down.

How can I get to the error log? I don't have time to do anything on the live system, and I can't find it on the USB.

First, why aren't you running 5.0.3 stable?

Second, since I doubt that is your problem (but you should update once you are stable) I'm going to ask if you have inspected your hardware for failed fans / detached heatsinks, etc?  Because your description sounds like a heat based hardware failure.  Be sure to check your PSU fan in addition to your cpu fan.  Also consider you might have a failing PSU even if the fan is running as expected.

I do not expect a log to tell you anything with a problem like this.  At least not until we determine it is not hardware based.

All fans running as they should, I will try to swap out the PSU tonight and see if it help :)

Thanks for the prompt reply! I'll get that update sorted as well, I'm not running 5.0.3 as it probably wasn't released when I installed, haven't rebooted since.

To be sure: What exactly is crashing / shutting down ?  Is your whole server physically powering down ? lights off ? fans down ?  Or do your shares stop working ?

If all really shuts down you need to check out the hardware, psu is indeed a good place to start... Also.. hook up a monitor and do a memtest (it is an option in the bootup menu)

The server boots fine and I can get into shell/webgui/unmenu but after a few seconds it physically powers down / shuts off.

This sounds like a fan or PSU issue.

PSU issue it was.

But in case I couldn't get this running again, how would I access the error log?

See SYSTEM LOG in my sig.

dga, your sig is literally some of the most critical info people need.  Thank you for having it.  That said ...

MODS: is there any chance you could make a sticky post in the support thread with this same info?

PS and unpin out of date pins
