December 11, 201312 yr I am in the process of setting up my first unRAID server. A few days ago I precleared two 2TB HDDs. I added one to the the array last night, so I could transfer data from an old external drive... The remaining disc was not assigned (but it was precleared) So then, I then went and bought another 2TB today, and in the process of preclearing that one as we speak (This one will be used for parity). However, I would like to bring the disc I didn't assign to the array up tonight (as disc 2) and add some more data to it...is that safe to do while the 3rd disc is preclearing? If it is safe, what happens to the data that is stored on disc 1? Will it spread to the other disc, once it is enabled? (I have a Highwater share enabled) or will it just remain on the original disc I wrote it to.
December 11, 201312 yr UnRAID will never move any data once it's in the array. The share settings are only applied to new file writes. Writing data to the array without a parity drive in place is not reccomended. There is no way to recover if the disk cannot subsequently be read.
December 11, 201312 yr Author Thanks dgaschk. Is it safe to bring the other disk into the array while the other is preclearing?
December 11, 201312 yr Thanks dgaschk. Is it safe to bring the other disk into the array while the other is preclearing? Yes ... pre-clearing is an entirely separate task that has nothing to do with UnRAID's operation.
