December 11, 201312 yr Hey guys, Plex now supports Chromecast! It's awesome. It works great, except with 1080p movies. It takes a while for it to start and also skipping/fast forwarding takes a while too. Also every 5-10seconds it pauses. I'm guessing my unRAID is too weak to transcode? I installed a test PMS on my Core-i7 PC and tested a few movies and it worked flawlessly and quickly. my unRAID is currently running on an AMD Athlon Dual Core 4850e - 2.5 GHz (and 2GB RAM) I have a spare parts that's a Core i5-750 system, you think it would help? Also I do connect to my Plex via my laptop when I'm at a friend's house and it currently plays flawlessly, but I'm guessing the Laptop itself is doing the transcoding and not the server? Thanks for any suggestions.
December 11, 201312 yr You're best to ask over at the Plex forums, but yes a general guideline for 1080p content is a dual 2.8ghz or faster processor.
December 11, 201312 yr Not sure how big your video collection is but back when I had a couple of AppleTV and even now I just used Handbrake to convert to high quality M4V and was done with it. No transcoding needed. Kryspy
December 11, 201312 yr Yeah, your unraid isnt beefy enough to properly transcode 1080p. I have run 4 concurrent 1080p streams from mine without a glitch. CPU is more important than RAM. I also only use 7200 rpm drives, so if multiple movies are being read from the same drive that's not an issue.
December 11, 201312 yr What StevenD said. CPU is more important, but RAM is also important, especially when it comes to transcoding. 2GB is quite low. I'd suggest 4GB minimum and preferably 8GB. In addition, when you are streaming remotely (from your friend's house) the server is doing the transcoding, not the laptop.

Thanks for any suggestions. More than likely, your home upload speed isnt that great, so its transcoding to a much lower bitrate than if you are streaming on your local network.
