RobJ
And post the full syslog, zipped. The very first drive error is usually the most important one to examine. Can't tell much from a syslog fragment, not enough to say whether it is a problem with the drive or the interface between the drive and the machine. The info at the bottom indicates issues with the interface, possibly bad power and/or bad connections to the drive, perhaps cables or backplane connections jiggling? Quote Link to comment
ikosa
I add full syslog and a smart report to the first post. i restart after the error to see if it persists. because of that there are two syslogs in the zip file. Quote Link to comment
RobJ
The drive itself looks fine, but the interface to the drive is very bad. It all began at 12:11, so might be interesting if you can think of anything that changed at that time, such as a jolt to the machine, or a power issue (like a brief power outage or nearby lightning strike). It is acting like the drive is jiggling in and out of contact, which is creating very unreliable communications between the drive and the system. It does not appear to be the SATA cable itself, but could be a loose connector at either end of the SATA or power cable to the drive. Or it could be a bad SATA port. Or could be power issues to the drive. Try reseating all connections to the drive, both ends of each cable if possible, working them in and out a few times in case any contacts are dirty or corroded. Check to make sure the power is sufficient to the drive, switch cables if possible to a different power cable with fewer drives connected. Reconnect to a different SATA port. Can't think of anything else at the moment... The read errors are only because of bad communications to the drive, not because of bad sectors. Quote Link to comment
ikosa
Robj Thanks for your reply. I don't change anything these days. I just upgrade from 5.0 to 5.0.4. Server is connected to a ups. A few days ago a power cutage happened but I guess (I ll examine syslogs to be sure) clean power down performed. Because no parity check done. At 12:10 I was listening music and maybe copying some movies to a flash drive from network that's all. I will try to reseat or change connections asap. Quote Link to comment
ikosa
Last night there was another power cutage and this morning unraid started with read ball at disk1(not really sure, i dig syslog a little bit but cant point that. it started automaticly when power is back at 08:08 and i get an error report by mail at 09:10) when i came home disk is jiggling and again errors on syslog. i stop the array, try to shutdown the server but after waiting a while it didnt powerdown (no webgui, no telnet but with ping replies) i shut it from the switch. Reseat a few times both ends of the sata cable and the power cable. and power on the server. Now still red ball but there is no errors on syslog and no jiggling. i start a long smart check. i m sharing the latest smart report. i cant understand it well but seems like there is a read error isnt it? where can i understand that smart test is finished? i ll reshare a new smart report when it is done. root@Tower:~# smartctl -a -A /dev/sdg smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [i686-linux-3.9.11p-unRAID] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Seagate Barracuda XT Device Model: ST32000641AS Serial Number: 9WM42YGM LU WWN Device Id: 5 000c50 02dfa0bc5 Firmware Version: CC13 User Capacity: 2,000,398,934,016 bytes [2.00 TB] Sector Size: 512 bytes logical/physical Rotation Rate: 7200 rpm Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: ATA8-ACS T13/1699-D revision 4 SATA Version is: SATA 2.6, 6.0 Gb/s Local Time is: Tue Dec 17 22:03:33 2013 EET SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. ikosa
i reconstract and enable the disk a few days ago. it seems ok for now and i hope forever Quote Link to comment
vca
I'd be a bit worried about your disk or maybe your power supply: 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 071 071 020 Old_age Always - 29950 this is showing that the drive has gone through almost 30,000 power cycles! And since its only logged about 5000 hours that is like one every 10 minutes. Seems very strange. Most of my drives (Seagates, WD, Hitachi) have fewer than 20 power cycles in several years of use. Perhaps there is a problem with your power supply or the power connector to the drive? Regards, Stephen Quote Link to comment
