Trouble preclearing 2x disks

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have recently purchased 3 x WDCWD30EZRX-00DC0B0 (3TB WD Greens). I have attempted to run the preclear script (following the directions here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial), however have received the below error on 2 of the drives.

The unraid web interface disk management drop down boxes that should show the drives now show "0".

What is the best way to proceed? Any assistance would be much appreciated!

I just had the exact same thing happen to me with 3TB REDs. I am thinking that my problem is related to the psu and I have ordered a replacement. Can you attach your syslog and smart reports of the drives? Also, are you running any plugins? What hardware are you running unRAID with?

Currently installing a new set-up,  the array is not up and running yet. I have installed Unmenu but not really anything else yet.

Running on a Asus P5Q, intel Q6600, 4 gig ram and an old graphics card. The PSU is a 550W antec that would be 7 or 8 years old.

Have 7 HD's I am trying to preclear.

I am not near the computer at the minute so cant get hold of the syslog (will try and upload later). As for the SMART Reports - I tried to run these after the error message with no luck (the drives do not appear in unmenu and I could not get the reports to run using the command lines).

Once the other drives finish clearing tonight I will restart the system and try again to run the smart report

Its an interesting through that the PSU could be causing the issues (especially since i have had it for some time...)

Thanks!

Quick update

Since my last post 1 drive successfully precleared (with no issues) and 2 more got stuck at 96% of the post-read process (I left them for 7 or 8 hours with no change).

When I tried to run the syslog I received an empty file...

Making for a total of 4/5 drives failing in some form! I have lashed out and bought a new PSU. Will install and attempt to preclear all the drives again in the next few days...

Fingers crossed the PSU is the problem . I think it is a bit much of a coincidence that so many of the drives have had issues!

Let me know if that fixes the issue. I still haven't had the opportunity to install the new PSU in my friends server as he is out of town for the next week.

Quick update.

After rebuilding my system (new PSU ended up turning into new Motherboard, processor and ram as well... ;)), I re-run the preclear scripts.

The syslogs worked this time and one of the drives ended up having a alot of bad sectors and the other had one or 2. The drives didn't finish preclearing after 3 days so I decided to scrap them (the drives originally came from external cases and I voided their warranty by removing them. In retrospect I should have pre-cleared them before removing them from the cases...).

Hopefully no one else ends up having this issue!

Cheers

My father had a WD external that he wanted to take the drive out and place in his server. After I took it out and tried preclearing it failed. I used the online WD warranty site and got it replaced (outside of the case) no problem. So definitely give it a try!!!
