unRAID Showing RED Light Indicator. Please Help

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I moved about 8 months ago and my unRAID server has been sitting in a box. I finally took it out today and hooked it back up to my network.

I logged into the web gui and DISK1 has a red light indicator. All other lights are green.. I attached a Syslog and a screenshot of the web gui. Can someone help me why I'm getting the red light?

I am using version 4.7.

reseat all connections to the drive and reboot.

reseat all connections to the drive and reboot.

When you say reseat do you mean just reassigned each of the drives again then reboot?

He means disconnect and reconnect the physical cables.

Thanks, I'll give that a try right now..

I posted a Syslog but don't know what any of it actually means. If anyone is looking through it and see's a issue please let me know.

That particular drive is getting READ DMA errors, which can be a few things, including a loose cable.  Being that the server was moved and has been sitting in a box for 8 months, a loose cable is the most likely culprit.  Reseat the SATA and power conectors on that drive and report back.

Also thought I should add (in case it wasn't clear) you need to reseat that particular SATA cable on the motherboard side as well, as that may be where it is loose.

Had similar random red balls after my first build and would fix one, then another would pop up - turned out to be cheap sata/sas fanout cables causing the issue. So while you are reseating them, also inspect everything ie.. unplug cable from hard drive check for security - make sure locking mechanism is properly working - dust free - no damage, then repeat process for opposite side either from motherboard or addon card.

Ok guys, just checked all the cables and made sure they're plugged in. They all were so I booted the server back up.. No luck, disk1 still has the red light.

Any ideas?

post a smart report for the disk

post a smart report for the disk

How do I do that?

I'm new to unRaid again.. I don't think I ever ran a smart report before. Just syslogs.

should be able to go to devices page and select Disk1 and smart report should display then copy and past the text - or use unmenu thru disk management tab and post that smart report....

Hi, I went to devices page and there's nothing for smart report.

I don't currently have unmenu? How can I add that?

Hey guys, now that the holidays are over I got a chance to play with the sever again.

I hooked a monitor up to the server and logged into unraid using username "root".

I tried running a smart report using :

smartcrl -a -d /dev/sda

None of these commands were working. What am I doing wrong? Someone please help..

Joe, that was a typo error on my part in the post. I was using your smartctl I'm the console and it's not working. The forum isn't letting me post pics. If you give me your email address I can send you a picture of the screen when I try to run smartctl.

Anyone know what's wrong?

In the absence of any SMART data, it's hard to say for sure.

The drive could have actually failed; or you may have had a loose cable that's hopefully now been fixed.

You can do this:

Stop the array.

Unassign disk1 (so there's no disk assigned to that slot).

Start the array -- it will show a missing disk.

Stop the array.

Assign the disk back to disk1.

Start the array -- it should now rebuild the disk (this will take many hours) ... and if the disk is otherwise okay, all should be well when it's done.

Anyone know what's wrong?

Try typing the command again and post a screen shot of that so that what you typed and what the response was can be seen.  I doubt I will be able to help but with that info others might.
