Upgraded to 5.0 and I'm lost

Featured Replies

I just upgraded from 4.7 to 5.0 and I don't know where to go from here. I did install unMENU, screen, and a few other packages, but is that the way I should be installing things? Is there a snazzy new package manager built into 5.0? There's a plugin Control Panel that I was looking at, but I don't know if it will play nice with unMENU. Should I even keep unMENU or are there other plugins that do things better? I'm preclearing a new 4TB drive right now hence the upgrade to 5.0 in the first place. It just seems like I'm going in 10 different directions and I don't know where to go from here. All my data seems to be intact and I can access my TV Shows form the media player downstairs like normal.

unMenu works fine with 5.0, but some of the packages and plugins may have compatibility issues.

Probably best to take it a little at a time. There are a lot of plugins available now, many are not available as an unMenu package. Just browse the threads in the plugins subforum and ask questions. Do you have a cache drive? Many people configure a cache-only share for use by additional applications. Shares marked as cache-only won't be touched by mover.

What additional applications are you interested in?

Agree with the "slow and easy" approach.    UnRAID with the stock WebGUI and UnMenu is very stable.    Simple Features is NOT fully compatible with the latest version, so I'd avoid that.    For any other packages you want to use, read the forums to see if they have any v5 issues before you install them -- and even then be sure you thoroughly test your configuration after each one, so if you do encounter any issues you know which package caused them.

Thanks guys. I uninstalled the Control Panel Plugin because I wasn't sure if it was Ok to have more than one package/plugin manager at once. Right now I'm using unMENU and have used it to install Screen for preclearing, mail and ssmtp, hourly status email, and the APC battery backup plugin. Should those all work well in 5.0?

Hmm, for some reason it's saying mail and ssmtp aren't installed, I guess I forgot to select re-install at boot...

How do I get the Cache-Dirs and Sleep working in 5.0? I think for now that's all I want to run on the server. I need to start another thread on keeping it quiet, the thing sits next to my desk and it's LOUD.

Did you change hardware when you upgraded?    The system shouldn't be any louder than it was with v4.7

What's different??    i.e. different location;  different set of drives?  List the specifics of your system and we may be able to suggest a way to quiet it down  :)

Nothing has changed since I built the server a few years ago, so it has always been super loud. I'll start a new thread when I have some time to tinker to keep things separate.

... so you've tolerated this "super loud" noise for YEARS ???  8)

Post a note in this thread when you start your other one to call attention to it.  It would be very helpful if you post your complete configuration details when you do so.

Yup, and I work from home too  :-[

I'll be sure to post pics, setups, etc when I get around to the new thread and I'll mention it here.

Preclear is on cycle 2 of 3, 74% of the post-read done and 65 hours elapsed so far. These 4TB drives take a while to clear!
