January 2, 201412 yr Hello I'm very excited to get started with my first unraid server. I know roughly what I want, but I have a few questions. I want to start building this in about a month. I will be buying everything from scratch, and I'd rather spend more money now and have it be more powerful and future proof. But energy consumption very important to me as well. I plan on getting the Xigmatek Elysium Black case, it has 12 external bays which I plan on installing 4 5x3 drive cages on, giving me a total of 20 drives in hot swap cages. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811815011[3] Initially I plan on having a 500gb SATA cache drive, a 4tb warm spare, and a 4tb parity drive, and 3 4tb data drives. The 500gb SATA will be installed in an internal bay, rather then a removable cage so the system will have a total 21 drives. What I am unsure of is what to go with for a motherboard/cpu combo (IPMI is important to me), and what controller card I will need...or will I need 2 controller cards? I plan on getting 16 gigs of ECC RAM. I'm going to play it safe with power and get the Seasonic X-850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151102 I know I will be using this for streaming to a few XBMC systems, sabnzbd, torrents, btsync, plex, ftp, sftp, and surely more plugins as well.
