January 12, 201412 yr not happy with usps... i shipped my server from the uk to hawaii and it got jacked up royally drive caddies broken and the cpu boumcing around inside the case... i got a new cpu and loaded up esxi like before... but after messing around some i was able to get unraid running correctly minus two red balled hds... they are marked as missing... is there a way of verifing they are bad or not... i would like to just get one up and running so i can rebuild the array with some spare hds that i have... btw that makes 5 bad WD green drives this year alone... thanks mat
January 13, 201412 yr Can you grab a smartctl report from the commandline? smartctl -a /dev/sd? where /dev/sd? is the drive in question.
January 13, 201412 yr Author just did a ls /dev/disk/by-id | more and the hd isnt listed there... i have also moved the hd around to different channels to be sure thatthe one bay wasnt bad and nothiing shows... ideas???
January 13, 201412 yr If it doesn't show up anywhere, i.e. the bios, then there isn't anyway to verify it by software. perhaps try it in another machine and try the manufacture diagnostic software.
January 13, 201412 yr Author i just tried smartctl --scan and its not listed there either.... hhhmmmmm
January 22, 201412 yr Author here is a new update... I have tried both drives with the WD diag software and they both pass... but that's a false positive... neither of the drives spin and neither of them are reporting SMART data... after getting on the phone and speaking with the warrenty department they have agreed to recover one of the drives... but that brings up the question if they were to recover the HD would that mess up parity? also these drives were damaged though shipping do you think it would be something that got damaged externally? could i do the repair? thanks, Mat
January 22, 201412 yr Author ok... so i got one of the two to work...upside down... strange... but the question is how do i add a hdd to the array to start the rebuild.... or just copy the data off of the hdd to a different one and forget about the parity... suggestions...
January 22, 201412 yr Author well seeings how it's quite here this is what i have done... the rebuild of the lost HDD will not work because the other damaged HDD keeps having errors... but i can access the data there and also the data that would have been on the Lost HDD... so im just moving the data over to the other HDDs in the array and then I will pull out the damaged HD and then rebuild parity with fewer HDDs in the array... I hope this can help someone... mat
