[SOLVED] Delay for telnet/ssh connect to unRaid (10-30secs)

Featured Replies

For quite some time, my ssh login has taken pretty exactly 10 seconds when logging in to unRaid. I might even be suspecting a timer, since its so exact. If i delete my known_host file (on windows/cygwin) and do ssh to unraid, then it will immediately display the warning 'authenticity of host, fingerprint is fo:ob:ar'... Telnet from putty 0.63 also takes 10 secs to show login prompt.

I does this regardless of whether the unRaid tower uses DHCP or fixed if (jvf another post on the topic) http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=879.0

I tried reverting to stock unRaid-5.0.4, I did this by moving all folders except syslinux to a subfolder (by name 'Disabled'). Then telnet would take 30secs, and of cause there's no ssh. Then I tried to just add overbyrns OpenSSH plugin. Then telnet and ssh still took 30secs, that its much slower than before. The 'ssh -V' says (if I recall) ssh 0.9.8r, openssl 0.9.8n in this stock unRaid+overbyrns openssh plugin.

Turns out it was my router. I'm quite supprised because of the immediate response with ssh warning-new hosts, but I guess it must have been hanging waiting for router response afterwards. I updated my over 1-year old dd-wrt firmware on the router and a few days later I noticed the problem was gone. Its now been gone for 4 days, and it was persistent before, so I guess that was it.

Hmm, I wonder if wireshark could have helped me debug it...

I have a very similar problem - often, but not always, it would take exactly 10 seconds for the unRAID server response to appear, after I issued the 'telnet tower' command.  I had tower set in my hosts file on the desktop computer, so the delay shouldn't have been caused by any dns lookup (although 10 seconds is normally the time taken to timeout a dns request).  I never noticed any delay when issuing ping commands.

However, I've recently turned off the dhcp/dns services on my router, having installed a Raspberry Pi/Arch Linux to handle the core network tasks. Now the delay appears to have vanished.

Interesting thanks. The problem reappeared for me after rebooting my router a while back. I just tried disabling DHCP on the router and immediately the ssh-login was without delay, instead of 10sec. If I enable DHCP and disable DNSMasq for both DHCP and DNS then ssh login is also immediate. If I enable DNSMasq for DHCP it'll take 10secs again, and if I enable DNSMasq for DNS it takes roughly 6secs. I use (netgear) router with DDWRT.

Thx a lot for solving my (non-unRAID related router) problem.
