January 15, 201412 yr Hi chaps, Tom has asked me to start proceedings toward setting up a special sub-forum toward making the unRAID 'in a distro' and I figured we'd need a name, a common name, that we could all refer to this new part of unRAID by. This thread is not to discuss the merits of the project, that has been done to death already. So, I came up with a list of names I could think of off the top of my head. Feel free to suggest others and i can modify the poll if they're suitable. Cheers.
January 15, 201412 yr I voted unRAID Linux Edition. It seemed the least 'tacky' sounding. Which, for something that could/will be associated with a commercial product, seems sensible. I'm sure that in the future Tom wouldn't want potential paying customers put off by the sight of "unRAID l33t H4x0r edition" being associated with unRAID
January 15, 201412 yr Author I agree about tackyness and thought about the names for about half an hour believe it or not! I though continuing the plus, pro, extreme model was probably the simplest but my fav was Linux edition too although it still needs something to be perfect. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
January 15, 201412 yr I voted for "Unraid NG" as if unraid linux distro comes into reality it is going to be a real Next Generation version. "Linux Edition" is probably the most appropriate name but having in mind that the current version is based on nothing else but linux one can think that the predecessor is based on windows for an example. Just my thoughts.
January 15, 201412 yr unRAID/OS Hear are some of my thoughts in the process. No offense meant to any designations. It should be a simple thing that rolls of the tounge. When people hear MAC OS/x you know what the deal is. When you are running unRAID you are running the appliance model. When you are runnng unRAID/OS you are running unRAID in a full Operating System. Next Gen will probably only go so far in the future. Linux edition, well it's all linux. There is already Basic, Plus, PRO. Extreme doesn't really differentiate that it's basic, plus, pro in a full operating system and can be mistaken for a feature level. unRAID OS Edition. 'edition' is just a noise word that does not mean all that much. unRAID 5.0/6.0,etc, etc unRAID OS 5.0/6.0, etc, etc Then you have the basic, plus, pro values to determine features within.
January 15, 201412 yr Of that bunch, I'd likely agree with 'Linux Edition' being the best. However, it would invariably get truncated to unRAID LE which then looks lime a limited or light version. I do like mattkhans suggestion. (unRAID Server / unRAID Applicance) One thing to consider, I presume there would be free, plus and pro versions of each release (distro & appliance) Therefore, the name selected would need to work in that context. eg unRAID Appliance unRAID Appliance Plus unRAID Appliance Pro unRAID Server unRAID Server Plus unRAID Server Pro How about some of these; unRAID Host Edition unRAID 64D (d = distro) unRAID 64S (s = server) unRAID 64L (l = linux) unRAID v6 or maybe named for the Distro. eg unRAID centOS edition unRAID Arch edition Peter
January 15, 201412 yr Author I think I like the unRAID Application / Server / OS naming model... Technically the current product is called unRAID server already and this is where clarity is required. I also suppose that the existing license models would need to be accounted for name wise, and why not leave the basic, plus, pro structure in place to keep that aspect as simple as possible... I also think Tom is considering making it a package to be installed directly into any distro, in that situation users would simply 'pacman -S unraid' and pull down the latest emhttp from a repo. So, would a separate name even really be required? I don't know, we need some way of referring to it I think though.
January 15, 201412 yr I tweeted friend, and fellow unRAID user (demo edition), @DaLetterMan and he gave me a few ideas: 10. unRAID-GE (grumpy edition) 9. unRAID-CE (centos edition) 8. DAIRnu 7. tpFKAuR (the product formerly known as unRAID) 6. unRAIDnu 5. unRAID Dapper 4. unRAID-HAL9000 3. un-unRAID 2. unRAID-BFG 1. unRAID VMS (virtual machine support
January 15, 201412 yr I also think Tom is considering making it a package to be installed directly into any distro, in that situation users would simply 'pacman -S unraid' and pull down the latest emhttp from a repo. That's a pretty exciting nugget! Would work perfectly for me.
January 15, 201412 yr Me too, been playing with a VM and snapraid if this came along I wouldn't need to. God I hope this happens. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
January 15, 201412 yr unRAID OS unRAID 5.0/6.0,etc, etc unRAID OS 5.0/6.0, etc, etc Then you have the basic, plus, pro values to determine features within. I didn't consider adding the plus and pro to the name. I would like to change my vote to unRAID OS! I dont want my signature to get any longer!
January 15, 201412 yr Limetech calls its current product: unRAID Server OS, should a new name not be derived from this ? Perhaps simply adding a plus sign: unRAID Server OS+ ?
January 15, 201412 yr Limetech calls its current product: unRAID Server OS, should a new name not be derived from this ? the current product is an appliance that happens to use a server OS, it's not really a server OS in itself.

Have a look again at the Limetech site ... it refers to the software not the appliance.

Have a look again at the Limetech site ... it refers to the software not the appliance. it says In more technical terms, unRAID® is an embedded Network Attached Storage (NAS) server operating system. which sounds like an appliance to me even if later on it refers to the product as "unRAID Server". IMV the product (unRAID®) is a piece of software that lets you create an appliance out of commodity hardware.
January 15, 201412 yr It also says: Start out by downloading unRAID Server OS for free! Unregistered unRAID Server OS supports up to 3 hard drives. Anyway I am not here to start a name war
January 15, 201412 yr Author Limetech calls its current product: unRAID Server OS, should a new name not be derived from this ? Perhaps simply adding a plus sign: unRAID Server OS+ ? So you want unRAID Server OS+ Plus / Pro? Too confusing IMHO... We want something that is going to encapsulate unRAID as a package, which is what's the meat here. unRAID PKG unRAID <Insert OS / Distro Name> Edition (though as it will be across almost anything with a package manager who knows if this even makes sense?) unRAID Full / Complete / Ultimate I particularly liked the idea of renaming the existing appliance model as we know it 'unRAID classic' and the new one something more sophisticated though...
January 15, 201412 yr If it gets distributed in a package via the package manager of many distros, I think the only name that makes sense is 'unRAID'. Of course this would also require the renaming of the existing product to unRAID Classic, unRAID Appliance, etc. That said, I do like unRAID Ultimate.

Of course this would also require the renaming of the existing product to unRAID Classic, unRAID Appliance, etc. I'm not fond of renaming the current product to classic. I think it's fine the way it is. unRAID SERVER OS. It's a complete server operating system. Yes, it's an appliance model, but it's pretty complete to be a quick concise bootable NAS Server environment. I like the newer name of unRAID OS which implies it's to be installed into an OS. or even unRAID CENTOS Edition unRAID (distro) Edition. is more meaningful. Think about other products. Mac OS/X Mac OS/X Server Windows Windows Server. We already have the server product, there's no need to change it. The unRAID layer on another operating system does not necessarily make it a server.
January 15, 201412 yr Author The unRAID layer on another operating system does not necessarily make it a server. Agree entirely. I do like 'unRAID classic' myself though!

The classic seems to be only meaningful if you know the history of unRAID. Would you buy a software product called Classic? Linux Classic? Windows Classic? MAC OS Classic? Photoshop Classic? ... Sounds kinda cheesy, old, left behind. It really depends on where the core product/bread and butter is going to be for limetech.
