January 21, 201412 yr I'd really like to be able to access files from my unraid when I'm out and about. I know unraid supports FTP on some level but how might I go about securing that connection? Or would it make more sense to setup SSH and and use SFTP? Does anyone have any ideas / experience? Many thanks, Dan
January 21, 201412 yr My suggestion would be to setup a VPN server either on your router (if it supports doing so), or on the unRaid server itself via the OpenVPN Server plugin.
January 21, 201412 yr Author I've just had a go using the SSH method. I honestly didn't expect that I could make this work but it was surprisingly easy. I installed the package from unmenu (openssl and SSH) then set a strong password on the root account. Once I forwarded port 22 on my router I was able to use WinSCP (PC) and ForkLift (Mac) to access my shares from the remote site. The file transfer is maxing out the uplink and it would appear to be secure. My router doesn't have any VPN support but I'm interested to know why you would favour this over the SSH method? Is VPN more secure? Many thanks, Dan
